Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Ruthie, it's very pleasing and lovely. I love the light hitting the tops of the trees, very special; I love it. My question is this: the part of the upper field near the sun, lovely and bright. Would the lower field, facing away, have the same light? If this were my painting, I'd have it in a frame in a heartbeat. I wouldn't look back. I think it's great.

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

No confusion Raini. I could see the little squares of the base paper and for a moment I thought it was a special effect on iPad. It came out really really pretty. I'm torn between the mountains and the sunlit sky. I did some thumbs of the mountains. You did such a nice crop of the sunlit sky. Lovely.

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

I thought I would post one of my photos today and show you how my morning went. The first picture is the original photo I took myself of a local park, the second is a cropped/edited version from my ipad.

So much happening...lots of good stuff!
Zippie...your mountain scene came out very well...i like the simplification you did.
Raini...really like what you did, putting in the bridge on the lake scene.
And your latest! Love the crop you did on your photo, and appreciate seeing the steps you took.

Ruthie...Another winner coming up. love seeing your steps in the process.

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Raini, Very lovely painting of the sunset! You've simplified the shapes and the colors! Nice!

And a very nice painting and demo of your winter scene! You gave the painting more "life" than the photo!

Ruth, Another wonderful demo! This is a complex landscape with lot's going on! A real challenge, but you simplified it nicely! Lovely touches of light on the trees and a few details where you want us to look! Very lovely!

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Thanks all for the comments on mine. I've been busy today doing another for the 30 days challenge so the jury's still out on this one!
Jay, as far as the sunlight goes, well, you know I made it up (using the area in the photo which had naturally lighter vegetation). But in the Lake District there are many fells (hills) and usually lots of clouds. So it is quite normal to get streaks of sunlight bursting through in rather random areas! that's what I was trying to get at I guess. And that's one reason it's such a special place...those stunning shafts of sunlight between rain showers!
Raini, great to see your stages! I love how you made the building more prominent....I hardly noticed in in the photo. It gives us a definite focal area towards which the lines and curves you've created naturally lead. Good work!

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Raini, love park photo. Fantastic crop. The photo was so rich with targets..you did a lovely job cropping. And a beautiful finished product.

Ruthie, a magical place there. As I said, I'd have it framed in a heartbeat.

Raini, I like seeing the progression in your painting, from the photos to the finished piece. It helps me with my own work to see the step-by-step that others use. The finished winter scene is lovely.

Thanks everybody for the good comments!
Hello Barbara😀, I'm pretty much a newbie with pastels so I don't know if my "process" is the best approach lol, I'm glad you found it helpful...I know I love to see other artists WIP's too.

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Ok guys, I put on my gloves, covered the table and invaded the kitchen. (note strong shadow on the table.) Don. Showing the thumbs and the block in 6 x 8 on pastel premier white paper. Hard pastels. Somehow this seems harder than how I normally work. I don't know why.

All comments welcome. I'll continue on

Off to a good start Jay, really like your thumbnails! Will check back later, hoping for another look and some cookies (you did say you took over the kitchen !)

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Ahhh, cookies. They are in the computer, naturally! Have some. yes, I paint in the kitchen, flat on the table. Here is my next phase. I touched the rough pastel with a Viva paper towel and added some more. Am I on track? NOT FINISHED. But I am. No more for today, I don't think. Back needs a break. 6 x 8 white pastel premier. Hard Pastels. Thank you Don for the reference. (I always "see" it better online so I rush to post.)

Looking really good Jay! Good to have a break, you can look again with new eyes and see there is NOT much more to do here!

No WIP for this one but actually it's just shapes, not much colour, relies on values. So I thought it would be appropriate for this thread. This is from a photo I took on a January walk way above lake Windermere in Cumbria, England. "After the Rain, Windermere"
