Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Holy cow! Such great stuff! So interesting to see everyone's intepretations.

Ruthie and Naglel, love the winter scenes...very inspiring and instructive...and boy do I need it!!!

Kedwards, JudiB...both lovely renditions of that sunset. And Jay, you are surely braver than I am...not even going to attempt that puppy. Great job!

Dsoc, can't wait to see your progress....

Here's my version of the mountain scene...I'm going to keep working on the winter scene....I know thiis is good for me cause I'm way too comfortable just doing mindscapes all the time....cheers!

Absolutely OK! We would all look forward to it!

Thanks Don and Jay
Ive been saving the ref on my ipad and then I edit it either to a tonal or perhaps a color choice such as transfer or chroma...whatever gives me the value and big shapes the easiest...here is another one...got my chores done...er most of them

Good one Zippie! You got the misty look really good on those hills.
Raini, good for you taking on this one. You used a similar crop to the one I was considering. You did not try to copy the photo. As a result you've created an individual work of art!
Thanks Don. I've got another in the process. Here it comes....

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Next project. This is my photo which is of a place called Tarn Howes in the English Lake Disrtict.

It was a dull day but I aim to make it sunny While there's not much exciting colour in this there is a good range of values. So good that when I started my simplified shapes I got embroiled in 6 values and still didn't have enough. So I took myself in hand and reduced it to 4. The black will not, of course, be all so dark, there will be variations, even light areas in places. But I will try to stick to the shapes I chose and keep them mostly distinguishable from each other. Here's my "road map". Please ignore the small lonely black area...I meant to make it grey

Off to the studio now.......

Raini, I thought I was looking at an iPad rendition. Lovely! just lovely!

Ruth. I applaud you. That's hard to reduce them down. Thanks for showing us how. Beautiful scene.

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

I've finished with this one for the day but I plan to do some tweaks as I'm not happy with the outcome.

sketch

block in (already losing the values!)

adding colours

Where I am now. It's too detailed, too precise but the main thing is that the fells at the back I think are too dark and don't go back enough. I'm also wondering if the strip below them, which I made sunlit, is also not working. I'd be grateful for your thoughts......

sippie, great atmosphere with the mist in the mountains.
Raini, your reflections are outstanding. Water is not an easy element to paint.
Ruthie, you are steaming along and keeping it simple. Nicely done!

Ruthie, so lovely! The light playing on the tips of the trees, reflections in the water ...sweet...I see what you mean about your blue mountains but it is so marginal, you could soften and tone down a tad ...but perhaps it's not needed, I love it, just the way it is!

Re: The Spotlight - January 2016 - Simplifying

Thank you for the nice comments everyone!

Raini, really nice...and I agree with Ruth...great crop...adds a whole new dimension and originality to the scene.

Ruthi... I really dig those little islands of trees! I think you have the best of both worlds there....detail in the fore/middle ground and plenty of atmosphere in the distance. Well done!
