Re: The Spotlight - December 2015 - Happy Holidays

I like your orange tree, Robert! I immediately thought it had a very powerful though minimalist look. The sky looks blustery, and the way you've shown the foliage blowing in the wind has so much action.

Raini, Lovely painting! I'm in the holiday mood now!

Robert, You do so much with so few strokes! Wonderfully simplified! Such energy!

Raini, your card is lovely. Isn't it nice to have some present come early!! You did nice things with the new supplies.

Love the orange tree Robert - it sits against that blue paper beautifully - really jumps out!
Raini - well done for getting the Christmas spirit going - lovely baubles!

Re: The Spotlight - December 2015 - Happy Holidays

Thank you! In the photo everything was still but every time I see scenes like that I can't help remembering how windy Chicago autumns got, how the leaves were always skittering around and trees swaying and branches moving. I think working fast leads to that conciseness. When I slow down to do something layered on sanded paper it comes out different but there's something about foliage that makes it hard for me to make it static.

This month is going to be fun because I still want to do more!

Re: The Spotlight - December 2015 - Happy Holidays

Thanks Jay, yup -20 is about norm for mid winter with the occasional dip to -35...-40ish with the wind chill thrown in! Add a couple feet of the white stuff and having to plug the car in to keep the battery warm ...well that's Alberta usually...but this year a reprieve with El Niño? Nina? Just a skiff of snow and temps of -5ish so far, can still see green grass on the edge of my lawn

Raini, both your paintings are lovely. The tree and baubles really puts me in a holiday mood! The robin is wonderful - so cheeky with his santa cap!

Robert, your orange tree is very lively and vibrant. I can feel the wind!

I think your little bird with his jaunty hat is really cute! I love the berries he's perched on, too. They look so frosty real.

Raini, that's too cute! Love it. That cap is so funny! The bird and berries look so true, that helps support it. Well done! It reminds me of an illustration from a Christmas story, has to be, you should write one with the santa bird!

Brrrr! That's the reason I'm not Canadian. Otherwise I'd have moved North early on, but the climate would kill me.

Re: The Spotlight - December 2015 - Happy Holidays

Raini, Lovely "Santa" bird! ...and I hope we are talking temperatures in Celsius, right? If so, -5 is bearable, but -35 to -40 is still downright cold! (In fact, for trivia lovers, -40 Celsius is also -40 Fahrenheit) Brrr...

Rochester, NY can get pretty wintery but temperatures rarely go under 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-18 C). The lake (Ontario) gives us a lot of snow, but keeps us warmer than some other places. Keeping fingers crossed, only had one night with about 2 inches of snow so far this winter. Usually we have a lot more snow by now!
