Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Raini your painting has a calligraphic feeling to it that adds to the feeling of leaves blowing in the wind; quite lovely.

Karen you pointed out something I forgot to mention to Blayne - thank you! The askew window pane didn't bother me at all either. 😊

Peggy, I agree with Karen--we're lucky to have you! And thank you for your comment, too, about the window panes. I thought briefly of getting out my ruler and square, but that often makes a painting go stiff, I think.

Thanks Peggy, Jay and Judibelle..I was quite perturbed when I ran out of the light blue ppffff.
Judibelle great work on the pumpkins, your colors are beautifully soft and those pumpkins look so plump and ready for my pie pan!
Here is the pumpkins I was playing around with before the Pastel Emergency..fortunately I still have lots of orange and red lol!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

It's a full on pumpkin riot! lol

Judi and Raini I love the differences in the intensity of color you've both used; both work very nicely. Something you may want to take another look at are the shadows. I see on the original photo they aren't well defined. However, you can get out your Artistic License, and help those pumpkins sit in the scene as well as have greater definition in the objects themselves. It doesn't take a great deal of definition to make a difference.
All in all I'd say, "Job well done." To both of you. 👍👍

Karen and Blayne - thank you. I help where I can, but the final decision is always the individual artist's. Only the individual knows what's in their vision. Isn't it great that we don't all paint exactly alike? 😊

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Nice bright pumpkins, Raini. They would have done nicely in our "line" spotlight too. What was the paper? I'm just curious.

Peggy, I was hoping to see your demo of the fall tree illustrating those planning points you mentioned. I hope to tackle the tree on Monday. I hope you're still planning to show us.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Thanks Peggy! Love your tips and advice as it fuels the curiosity to explore new things!
Funny I had the shadows quite a bit darker but toned them down as sometimes I think my art is too "loud" like a bull in a china shop lol!
I shall endeavour to explore that side of me....but on less expensive paper!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Jay, the paper is Strathmore Pastel sheets. I would love to try some Canson or Velour one of these days! I actually have some real velour fabric stretched on a board. It was used as a backer in a picture frame to display a piece of embroidered material. I'm toying with the idea of the pastels on that? Don't know if the fixative would work, it prolly wouldn't be classed as archival but might be fun!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Wow, look away for a couple of days and see how many beautiful paintings have been posted in that time!

Kedwards, I love your windy autumn road as well as your leaves. I also kind of preferred your first version of the leaves, there was a brightness and freshness about them.

Jay, you've really done a nice job on your lake painting. Such beautiful colours, and I really like the style of the foliage.

Blayne, your window painting is very creative and really gives the feeling of being cozy and warm indoors on a blustery autumn day! Love it.

Raini, both your leaves and pumpkins are lovely. I like the warm and cool colours in your leaf painting. Interesting the effect you got with the pastel on canvas. I wonder if a spray of fixative would let you add any more pastel?

Judibelle your pumpkins are so bright and cheery. I like the soft greens you've used in them, nice touch!

I am suffering a bit from artist's block. I can't seem to find an autumn colour reference that really calls out to me to paint it. Will keep looking! Here we're having a wet and windy day and most of the leaves are already off the trees, so it looks a lot like Blayne's window scene!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Hi Sarah, the canvas was interesting and frustrating st the same time...and I did use a fixative but quickly realized it would hold no more!
I am in the same pickle here with all the leaves gone and dreary skies...our fall is fleeting and more yellow than say Ontario where the fall colors are spectacular. So I relied on photo refs...I feel your pain...hope you get past the block soon, would love to see your work😀

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Sarah, I went trolling back through the fall and autumn spotlights from past years. Maybe something there will catch your eye. Hope you find one. Thank you for the comments on my painting.

Raini, is it hard for you to get paper in Canada? Do they charge duty if you order from the U.S.?
