The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Welcome artists!

Here is a quick recap of what The Spotlight is all about!

The Spotlight is an activity thread for pastel artists of all experience levels working from photos chosen by a monthly host. Most months, the host will choose photos from only one subject, putting that subject into “the spotlight,” so to speak! For example, one month the subject will be painting water, another month will spotlight flowers, etc.

Some months, rather than spotlight a subject, the focus will be on a challenge of some sort. In those cases, we might have a wider variety of photo references, but “the spotlight” will be on the challenge itself.

Since this is a group activity, we can pool our knowledge and resources, and grow as artists in a fun, “no-pressure” atmosphere.

And, remember, no critiques unless specifically asked for.

The intent is to have fun, try new things, experiment, and perhaps most of all, to see what our friends and colleagues are painting from the same reference material!

Please note: The photos this month were taken by me or are from the Reference Image Library. You have permission to use the photos as reference to create your artwork and to sell them and/or exhibit them. The actual photos still retain the copyright of the photographer. So you cannot copy the photo to your blog, for example, without the permission of the photographer, or digitally alter or reproduce the photo for any purpose other than for your personal use, with the exception of crops, digital alterations and posts of these photos within "The Spotlight" thread.

This month’s Spotlight is on…Fall Color!

As we do every year here in the the Spotlight, we celebrate and appreciate the splendor of Fall Color! Feel free to incorporate some of the topics that we have been experimenting with the last couple months (line and shape) - or just paint any old way you want! But any way you do it, let's enjoy the Colors of Fall!

The References (all photos by me):

Please feel free to choose one of your own favorite references that display the beauty of Fall Colors!

And, as always, feel free to crop and modify my references any way you choose. And have fun!

Don

Don, your photos are bee-u-tiful! But it's so nice, too, that you are inviting us to paint fall scenes from our own references, especially nice right now as I hope to do some plein air this month. Thank you for again hosting this wonderful thread!

Gorgeous references and a great tradition. Thanks for the beautiful water scenes and thanks for the pumpkins too. Just sketched one and really want a better sense of pumpkin anatomy and rendering and color - when I do them from memory I go way off sometimes. The shapes vary a lot but getting that overall shape and color not too stylized is awesome.

Love all of them and if I see something around here that's fall-colors I'll try to snap a photo on Wednesday. Seasonal changes are subtle in San Francisco, more evergreens than deciduous!

I'll start you off with one of mine. Cheating really as I did this last Fall! I was inspired by a photo showing the Autumn colours of a beech tree. But I didn't do this from a reference, just from that inspiration plus memory and imagination.
It's about 9x13" and I think it's on Colourfix.

Wow, Ruthie, did you have to set the bar so high this early in the month?!! That's gorgeous! That is a beautiful composition, and the colors in the foliage are just beautiful.

Ruthie, That is so beautiful. And from memory. oh MY!

Ok, I'm posting my effort. This is 9 x 12, Uart 320. First time for this grade. I was surprised that I didn't mind it. Watercolor underpainting, hard pastels then Terry Ludwig and a final touch of Schmincke. I know this will be worked on a bit but I would appreciate a serious critique at this point. I really would like to improve. Thanks.

Interesting. As I worked, I thought this was bright enough but in my family room, it looks so dark and dull. I'm disappointed.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Jay, you are almost there! The gorgeous fall colors really pop. The muted foliage colors on the far shore recede quite nicely. Here is a suggestion to consider. If you squint and look at the reference photo, the reflections on the water may be a bit darker than they are now. Also, a few more ripples in the foreground reflections could work. Whatever you decide to do, your foliage is beautifully rendered and reminds me of the delicate touch perfected by Paula Ford.

Thanks so much Karen. oh my, you'll give me a swell head! I'll collect the comments and make my corrections. Thanks. I appreciate it.

I had such a problem trying to find the blue for the sky. And now the painting ended up look quite drab from across the room. I'm working from an iPad and that nice backlit glow fooled me, I guess.

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Jay, you've now raised the bar so high that I can't paint anymore until I go to the basement for a ladder. Wow! That's beautiful! I see what Karen means about the reflections in the photo being darker, but yours are really pretty as they are. If you insist on a critique, I noticed the trunk of the orange tree at top right disappears in the sky hole before joining the foliage. And since your trees begin farther right than in the photo,I think adding that rock at the left edge of the land mass might be good to fill the space and lead the eye to the far land mass. Otherwise, kudos! This is beautiful!

Oh my, Jay and Ruthie....those are beautiful!
Agree with Blayne...the bar is very high...help me!.. I've fallen off my bar stool and can't reach my pastels😆 (She finds her seat and quietly slips her picture into her pocket....they musnt see my precious!)
Seriously, it is so great to see such quality work, it inspires and motivates me!

Re: The Spotlight - November 2015 - Fall Color

Thank you Blayne. That's very kind if you to say. I'll put that missing branch on my "fix it" list. Not sure about adding that rock....I'll think about it. Thanks.

Raini! Not fair. We want to see your work. You do beautiful things. Thanks for the kind words.
