Re: The Spotlight - October 2015 - Shape

Here is my version of the hollyhocks reference, on Pastelmat, 18x24 cm (7x9in).

I didn't take any in progress photos but during the process I did try to focus on the shapes of the flower, petals and leaves rather than thinking about the flowers themselves. It was a useful exercise. The background looks flatter in the photo than in real life.

Norma, that's really gorgeous! The flowers are beautiful, those great shades of yellow, and I really like the background at the bottom where it shows off those leaves so well.

Excellent job, Norma...I love the way you did the petals, and the leaves are superb.

Sarah, your Hollihock is gorgeous. Wonderful work! You have captured the light and the delicacy of the petals and the leaves are excellent too!

Thanks Julie and Don. this is where I am today. Still a little wonky but I think I am done!

Sarah, yours is great! Love the flowers and that bright sky. I think the gradient's very subtle but it's there. Gorgeous painting with beautiful shapes.

Jen, love the finish! Great bananas and gorgeous perspective. Beautiful accuracy. You played with the red apple shape and it's very natural now, much improved. Love those bananas, the linear accents are natural and often happen to bananas as they ripen. Great amazing fantastic ellipses ROCK! Well done!

Thank you Jen, Robert, and Don.

Jen, your still life turned out great! Such a lively combination of colours and shapes. I like the texture of the cloth on the table too.

Those are, in fact, lovely renditions of hibiscus, not hollyhocks. Sorry for letting the OCD get the better of me.

Re: The Spotlight - October 2015 - Shape

Sarah, I apologize that I didn't see your lovely hollyhocks--er, hibiscus (thanks, Dan! ) when I posted earlier. They really turned out beautiful! The greens in the foliage and the background blue complement the flowers so well!

Jen, your still life turned out great! The colors are terrific, and I especially love the vase. I really like the distance you achieved, with the table going into the background.

Norma, your still life is excellent and so different in emotion from Jen's, having a very calm feel due to the softer colors. The vase has such a soft, weathered look! I love the background on yours, too.

Thanks, Blayne. I see now that they are hibiscus, but the appearance of height in the reference photo had me fooled.

Norma, your still life looks good. It has a nice soft feel to it. Those bananas are very well done!

Thanks Blayne, it was fun to do!

Norma you did a great job on the still life, it is fun to see how different artists do the same reference. I also like the bananas the hardest (in my opinion) to get just right. Well done.

Very nice, Matt! It has a wonderful painterly quality but just enough detail--a difficult balance to achieve. You used gorgeous colors to show the shadows on his white feathers, and I love the lavender and gold up near his neck.
