Lynn, very nice! A great combination of line and shape. I like the way you have chosen where - and where not - to let the lines show. They work as well placed accents!

That quote (Lay the line down and leave it. If it's wrong, at least it's decisive) from your teacher is priceless! Advice I know I can use!

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

The lines are the edges between the shapes in this one. I approached this like a thumbnail I would do on location. I drew a simple pencil outline to place the major value shapes. The sky shapes of blue, light purple and gold were set with a no 2 pencil. The top ridge of the mountains were the first pencil lines. This is on a very smooth surface for pastel. These sunsets often have the thin lines of clouds in the distance that also set some of the perspective. The internal ridges of the mountain shapes are lines made with the side of the pastels.

Jay, nice lighting on your Lilies.
Thanks Don, that is quite the compliment for me!
Lilli, nice start , can't wait for the finish, it's sure to be great.
Norma, I too remember the crab and it was very nicely done. As to the reviewer who noted there were "no lines" in nature, I guess he or she never saw a barbed wire fence or telephone wires! That reminds me of the great argumentative debate about there being "No Brown In Nature"! Your ballerina is nicely drawn & correct. ( now as to the three legged chair...) LOL
Blayne, thank you for the nice compliment.
Lynn, great lighting I agree totally with Robert. It has a good feel to it.

Bill, I really like this! Lovely color harmony and the lines of clouds are gorgeous. ALso the line of the mountaintop. Very dramatic!

Bill, your landscape is a Western view and the type we aren't familiar with in Mid-Georgia. Thanks for giving us the insight into your landscapes.

Interior Arch for Sept Spotlight 11 x 7 pencil and charcol

I tried lightening but the image faded and extra contrast made more problems.

Bill, I like looking at your painting with the blue and yellow. I keep thinking that all the light purple is mountain tops poking through yellow clouds. I think I'm interpreting it wrong but it's very pleasant to view. Very dreamy. Restful.

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

I worked more on the lilies today. I think I'm finished but welcome any suggestions or comments. Not framed yet! 8 x 12 on M T Touch with mostly Terry Ludwig pastels and a touch of pencil. Lines...they escape me. I'm much too timid. For me, I would have to do a painting that feels bold in order to do line. Thanks for the reference Don. It's lovely.
