What are you using to protect the wood from dirt, inks, paint? Did you use wood varnish or wood protecting oil?

Thanks for the kind words about my desk. I am a novice woodworker at best, but the desk has turned out pretty well. I designed the desk in a 3d program called sketch-up. I took the basic design of a couple of desks that I had seen on the internet and combined them and made it how I wanted. Originally I had designed it to put a light table on the flat side but I decided against it.

I built it out of hickory and finished it with satin polyurethane for protection. I don't have the time or money to produce more than one of these desks, however similar oak ones that I based it off of sell for around $2,000.
