The Sky

I travel a lot around the world and always look at the sky.

Is it just me or does Holland have some of the bluest sky and fluffiest cloud formations?

The mouth of the Congo River has some of the prettiest sunsets (atmspheric dust I am told). And nastiest storm clouds

And the clouds in New Mexico just look different.

Out here in the Kazakhstan deserts, the summer sky is ususually a light cloudless flat blue.

The London sunsets were pretty last week.

Re: The Sky

In the state of Pernambuco there is the island of Fernado De Noronha. Each day I would look at the sky using the grey of the moro do pico as a reference. The sky looks so very deep blue at times and others the purest aqua. Some of the most beautiful skies, sunsets and sunrises I've ever seen.

One thing that always impressed me and it's not sky is the mercurial colour of the Atlantic sea as one travels down the coast. Off shore, where no land can be seen, it is almost like floating on a sea of mercury. There are truly some amazing sights in this world.

In England the sky has two colours, blue and grey, the majority colour being the latter

Re: The Sky

The sky is different within a 20 mile distance in the city of Los Angeles alone.

Re: The Sky

When returning to Aotearoa/New Zealand after any absence overseas I am always struck by the difference in the quality of the light. The atmosphere seems so much more open than I have experienced even in PNG and Australia. The first europeans to paint here had real difficulties with their dark palettes producing brooding works that are frankly depressing.

Re: The Sky

I've been all over the world as well. Right now I live in Illinois near the Mississippi River. I had only seen sundogs (circular rainbows reflecting off the clouds around the sun) maybe three times before moving here, but here I see them constantly. We must just be in the right spot for them.

I very much agree. I am a painter and skies are dependent on the day everywhere I've been. The UK in August had days with skies as sunny as any I've encountered in southern Italy and southern Spain. And I've been mightily rained on in both latter places at the same time of year.

If one could be shown the sky, in any part of the world, while blocking out the landscape, I don't think most people could tell where they were.
