Standing Proud

I painted and posted a version of this for the August Challenge. Thanks Kay for the wonderful photos..

I was so concentrating on the face of the bull that, I was told, I didn't "Finish." Got to thinking what that meant. I'm still not quite sure but after staring at it for the last few days I took it to mean that the bull's body was more of a monotone or, if you will, a dead spot and there was nothing to define what was in shadow. A with that in mind I added some color and a few sky highlights. Wish I would have done that from the get-go. The acrylics and I had a real disagreement over changing things.. But this is the finished version..

C&C Please.. 11x14

Re: Standing Proud

It's a really good piece Catherine - excellent color harmony on the bull and the background, plus plenty of color and contrast! I like this very much

Re: Standing Proud

This turned out great, Catherine! I don't think the body needs any more definition because the light is coming from behind. There would not be as much contrast with light from behind ...It almost has a silhouette feel. That works great in this case. Excellent work!

Re: Standing Proud

Nice job, Catherine! I think the side of the bull works just fine - there is definition in the shadowed side, it's not completely blacked out. There is detail and value/color contrast enough to help model the bull, and it should be a pretty significant dark value because of the backlighting in the picture.

Not sure how I missed this one - I am bullish on it! Love the blues you added to his coat. Very handsome!

Re: Standing Proud

Hi Catherine,

I agree with everyone else - great job, especially on the bull. Very well done. I just have one tiny suggestion. Where the yellow green grass meets the highlight on the bull's back - it might be nice to blue that grass down to make the highlight stand out more. Just a suggestion, it is wonderful as is.
