That is one of the problems with wetcanvas, it has a LOT of subdivisions, really a LOT. So many subdivisions that most of what one do can be fit within 2 or 3 sub-forum here. For example, you can easily fit the same work of question under Drawing, colored pencil, Illustration and human figure.... just a random example.

Personally I think a few sections could be theoretically merged and a system of people labeling tags on their threads that add other options to search for could concentrate the content and make the forums more ALIVE again.

And no matter how many forums we create we continually get requests for more.

The answer I think is to make specialist forums sub-forums of appropriate main forums.

I agree, would be ideal that if you enter in a painting forum (just a simplory example) you see all threads of acrilics, oils, guache etc... if one wants to feel more special and secuded it can click on the gouache section and see only the threads posted for gouache).
