Monthly CP Challenge - September 2009

Rules for the Monthly CP Challenge

1) Use one or more of the ref photos posted at the beginning of the Challenge thread. Feel free to adapt the refs to suit your creativity & imagination. Change the crop, add, subtract, combine them, etc.!
2) State which ref you are using & credit the photographer in your first post.
3) Please list the size of your piece, type of support (stonehenge, watercolor paper, colorfix, etc.), and type of pencils you are using. If you are using watersoluble pencils, please let us know if you are using them wet or dry.
4) Mixed media is ok, but because this is the cp forum, colored pencil should be the dominant medium used in your piece.
5) If you would like help along the way, please post your work as wip's (work in progress) in this thread. This is especially helpful if you're new to cp. It's always easier to change things early on! If there is something specific you want help with, Ask! What's bothering you may not be obvious to everyone else.
6) The Monthly CP Challenge threads will remain open for six months. You may post your work in the appropriate monthly challenge thread as long as it is open, even if a new challenge has begun. The current challenge will be stickied at the top of the forum.
7) There are no experts here! Some participants may have more experience with cp than others, but everyone is here to learn. Feel free to experiment, branch out, and push your boundaries. Of course, the most important thing: Have Fun!

Ready for the new ref pics? Drum roll please...

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - September 2009

Great refs, all of them!

I said I would take on this month's challenge (at least one of them) in WC pencil - the water lily looks very enticing. I have a pic of a water lily I took at Meyer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI, that I've been meaning to draw but never got around to it. Maybe this will be motivation to do a series?

That snail shell is tempting too (maybe after the lily?) - it's so Wabi Sabi. It's the kind of thing my wife would enjoy (much of her abstract art reflects this aesthetic).

Can't wait to get started ...

That snail shell looks very colorful! That would be a nice one to do on black paper, wouldn't it?

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - September 2009

the snail scares me! But I agree it would be a good black paper project.

But I think snail would be a challenge! Although I really like the wood grain in the shadow of the apples.

I think the lighting on the lemons would be a very challenging to capture. I like the continuation with the lemons as well!

Hmm.. tough choice.

So good to have y'all joining in the fun for this month! And I am really really hoping that stuff stays calm enough here on the home front for me to join in, too... Famous last words, eh?

I am so gullable and know nothing about colored pencils so I will try the snail on black and I love a dare. Why I took up painting to begin with...everyone said I couldn't do it so of course I had to try. Ugly or not I will post it.

Been looking at all the choices one by one many times. All are intriguing.
Think I'll go for the Duke Gardens by Immilam for a start.
Thanks for another challenge.

I am interested in the Water Lily. Love flowers anyways. I also thought the shell looked like a challenge to me.

bchlvr, your bird looks real nice.

Good one Briar! I like the sunny BG you did! A little bright catch light in the eye would make him/her come alive.

I have decided on this one after I finish my butterfly project.
