Re: Project Discussion: Self Portrait

Quick question, I am new to the site and read the rules, or as much of them as I could follow quickly. I have signed up for this project. Please explain to me the rules regarding the difference between figure drawing and fine art and pornography. I do not wish to break any rules but working on my figure drawing is something I wish to explore.
Thanks to all,
Nub

Welcome to WetCanvas, Sandra.

If it's figure drawing that interests you, you should check out this forum on the site: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=41

In general, if you're posting anything containing nudity, you have to flag it with the butt icon, which, if you look through the forums, you will see here and there.

I'm sure the folks at The Figure forum will be able to guide you better.

Update 2

Thanks for doing this WIP, Jeanette. It's coming along very well. Just that the colours are completely different in the two photographs.

I'm going to learn from you and try doing my next portrait part by part instead of putting in overall colour, and then going over it in shading steps as I've done now.

Yes, the lighting changes depending on whether the photo is taken in artificial light or natural daylight. As I work during the day, most is done under artificial light with as good a light as I can muster.

THe second update shows the colours better than the first. Scanning with colourfix paper and cp just doesn't work for me.

I always build my portraits progressively and they take time to add layers. All cp drawings go through an ugly stage where you want to toss them, but persevere, they'll come out in the end.

This looks so good. Great job. Unfortunately, I agree with Mithila that I do not have enough patience with CP. I am trying my best though.

Re: Project Discussion: Self Portrait

Just a quick update on my supplies, when the mail man did not come yet again today and the note said that they tried to deliver but I was not here again- I knew something was up (because I have been here and the mailman has not come) so I called the post office, and turns out they haven't delivered to anyone in 3 days because of all of our icy driveways!!! And yet they failed to tell us! (not sure how they would tell us) but anyway, I am off to the post office to get my stuff!!!

Re: Project Discussion: Self Portrait

Went to the post office today to pick up my package, because they told me to, well got three and guess what, the lady said "sorry we don't have any of your mail, the trucks must still be out with it, come back right before we close." So I did, and the lady said "Sorry they're still not back and they will be really late." So I stilllllll don't have my package from dick blick that I ordered on the 30th of January!!! She said to call early in the morning to see if they were going to deliver it this time or if I can come pick it up. I'm so frustrated!

Re: Project Discussion: Self Portrait

Hi All, I have signed up for this project but am having a boatload of trouble trying to get my picture posted on the project page. Would it be alright to post it here instead? I keep getting the message you need to specify a file. That's what I thought I did. If someone could help me figure this out I sure would appreciate it immensely. Have really enjoyed seeing everyone's work too!! Thanks ahead of time, Adria

Re: Project Discussion: Self Portrait

Adria, when you post a picture, you do need to add that photo or scan to the box where you see 'Browse'. This will let you find where you put the image on your computer.

Once you've added this, then it should work for you.

Tami, that's too bad about your art supplies, though it makes for a fascinating story here. Everyday I open this thread looking for news about your pencils as eagerly as I check to see if anyone else's face has appeared.

Tami, its frustrating that you have to wait. Hopefully tomorrow the weather will allow delivery.

Update 3

It's coming out beautifully. I had a niggling feeling that the pose was a bit strange, more specifically the direction of the gaze. But now I can see that it's very natural seeming. It looks like a portrait done from life, not from a photograph. Of course since we know it's an SP, we know that it could only have been from a photo, unless some complex mirror arrangement had been set up.

I wonder if there are any tips and suggestions about setting up a self-portrait... the pose, the angle, the lighting and so on?
