Re: August Landscape Challenge

Marvellous originality and interpretation Paula. I don't think it's too busy. What strikes me personally is the bush area beyond the road and which goes right across the board at the back could be greyed back a bit (?). Having said that I hope to do half as good. The main tree and foreground is superb.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

This is lovely! It looks to me like the road turns a corner rather than ending as you suggest; doesn't seem too busy at all. Yours will be a hard act to follow. I'm going to have to contemplate all that green for a while before getting started. You've provided some great pictures.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Beautiful painting Paula. As usual, I love your trees. You handled all those greens very well. I also really like the colours in the road.

I was just over here in the Landscape section checking out all the great paintings trying to pick up some info and I stumbled upon this thread. As soon as I saw the first photo I knew I had to paint it. I'm going to give it a try and see what happens. I look forward to seeing all the other paintings.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Paula, lovely painting as always (I'm a long time Pastel Forum lurker) and lovely refs! Thanks for hosting this month's challenge.

I'll probably be the odd one out - my attempt is in graphite. Anyway, slight caveat here - there's some sunlight glare just to the right at the top. Sorry about that, this was the best I could do.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Emi, Your graphite is really beautiful!

This is a new experience hosting an all-media thread. I'm so used to seeing everything done in pastels.

Thanks you guys for your kind comments!

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Now that I look at it this morning, the colors are so far off! Kathy, I greyed the background down a bit...thank you.

Have you ever done a painting and said "This is NOT what I wanted at all"? Well, this is it for me. I'm going to wipe it off and do it again. So here it is before it gets re-done.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

I love this one too Paula..the distance looks really good. Whatever you do -DON'T wipe it off! The overall tone is lower than the first one, but it is a lovely painting. Kathy

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Paula, I like the changes you made to your painting. As a fellow "pastel wiper" I can understand the temptation to put some dust in the air and start over. Just do me one favor before you wipe this, if that's what you decide to do. Write down exactly what bothers you about this and how you would change it for the better. When I put it in writing and refer to it often it usually works. Maybe you're just missing your trademark fall colors?

Emi, that is a beautiful drawing! The word that comes to mind is "sensitive" for me. You described those trees and the distance between them so well!

Re: August Landscape Challenge

Emi- Very good drawing. The two trees in the foreground look great. I really like the dedail and you depth you created. How big is the drawing? I hung around in the D&S channel for a few months so I am curious about the pencils and paper you used.

Paula- I say "This is NOT what I wanted at all" with all my paintings. Maybe it's because you stuck to mainly greens and you don't have your usual beautiful colours in the painting. I still think it is a very good painting but you have to do what you have to do. I am looking forward to seeing what else you come up with.

Paula,
This is absolutely wonderful. And love the color and who cares if you turn that way at the end. Great job!

Emi,
That drawing is very good. And the recession (which I would think would be the hard part) is spot on.

Re: August Landscape Challenge

These photographs are so beautiful - just had to paint at least one of them.
Below is my effort from today. It is an oil paintingl, 5X7, on canvas panel. Might just have to work on that second photograph as well - what fun!

Summer

Thanks for looking,
Claire
