Re: Remembering the old Designs, Magic Markers

Hi, Sandy K. I do have a few Chartpaks. They do have slightly wider tips than the old Designs, and a good range of colors. The only area where Chartpaks are inferior to Designs is in the gray ranges. Chartpak cool grays are still pretty warm, and their warm grays have uneven value gradations. Design grays had even value gradations, and their cool grays were visibly cooler than their warm grays.

Does any body know where one could still buy the old Design Markers?

Re: Remembering the old Designs, Magic Markers

I still do a lot of marker work, especially when making storyboards with really tight deadlines as well as concept comps. but I also do a lot of digital coloring when time permits. I guess it all boils down to knowing when to use a specific medium. My most complete range of markers is kurekolor with a few copics and sharpies added to the mix as well as a boxful of the tombo brush markers.

Re: Remembering the old Designs, Magic Markers

I've found a replacement that's pretty close to the old "Design" markers. It's called "Markette" and you can order it from different vendors in Canada. Copic, Chartpak, Tombo, Sharpie, etc. do not have a tip that is anything like the old "Design" marker. Chartpak's tip is hard, as is the Sharpie tip, and the brush markers like Copic, Tombo, are too brush like and don't spring back quickly enough. The Markette has a firm tip with a similar width, shape and feel to the old Design. It is solid, but has some slight springiness that lets you vary line quality, unlike the Sharpie and others of its ilk.

Look on Ebay and type "Design Markers" into the search box. Occasionally a batch or two will turn up.
