"Tuckered Out" WIP....

Once I feel I have a good drawing to work with, I then transfer that to the wood panel with charcoal. and then lightly wipe it off leaving a sort of a shadow that works as a contour drawing (see first pic).

I always start on the cat first, leaving the grain work until the end so I can match value of the the grain to the drawing as it needs it.

I always begin by laying down a base coat of either Cream or Beige over the whole cat except for the spots, which I will cover on my next posting.

As I go along, I will lay down lightly, color that I think Will work on various parts of the cat, making values my most important thing.

Thats how I begin each and every piece on wood, be it animal, or still life.

The first 2 pics will give you a better visual of all of this.

I have not posted for a quite awhile due to illness, so am very glad to get back to colored pencil once again.

Glad to see you back and to hear you are feeling better Ron. This looks as if it is going to be really nice but I can only see the thumbnail. The full picture isn't coming up for some reason.

Re: "Tuckered Out" WIP....

I thought I would post this as an update, because I have decided where the tail is going to go. I put it between the limbs when I can, to add depth to the painting.

Re: "Tuckered Out" WIP....

Welcome back Ron. You've returned in perfect timing for me. I will be trying out colored pencils on wood in the next couple of months as a Christmas gift for someone. I have already went back and looked at your past threads, and now I can watch this one. By the time I start mine, I should be well versed. Thanks so much for posting your WIP.

This is cool! I've not seen one of your WIPs before, so I'll be watching this with interest.

For the record, I can't believe you started with the cat's butt. I would've felt compelled to start at the head and work towards the business end.

This is so interesting to watch. I love how you use the grain in the wood as part of your painting. That is really working with your support rather than fighting it!

Re: "Tuckered Out" WIP....

Here is my latest update;

As you can see I have brought up the tail to a level that looks good for now. I have also started to bring up the limb detail which helps me locate the effects I will want in the background. I am using PC Sienna Brown to do this.
