We don't have the count the blender and the eraser, right?

Kristen, that's a good question... No blender or eraser allowed. The only blending that can take place is when your "counted paint strokes" interact with each other. You must resist erasing... instead paint that area with the appropriate color. forgive me for my sketchy initial instructions.

Also, you must paint all three apples.

I drew the apples in 8 strokes and then painted....I did not count the brush strokes on the painting...just the drawing....Did I flunk?

Darlin, there is no flunking. It's my fault for not posting thorough instructions.

It's okay to sketch the apples out, but when you start laying down your painted brush strokes, that's when the count starts. I'm going to give you and Kristen a brand new start-over... sort of an undo.

Kristen, use as big a brush as you can get away with. Don't paint detail... just the broad tones and color. Does that make sense?

Re: DIfFErEnT sTROkeS!!!

68 Strokes. I used an Airbrush - Graffiti variant. I used continual strokes to lay in larger colors and layed smaller zones of color on top of larger colors. I used pressure of stylus to vary thickness of lines. I started over several times, because my hand lifted or color went amuck. I think I could do it in half the strokes with the use of masking layers and more planning, particularly if I did not need to count drawing strokes. If continuous strokes were a consideration, I believe one could do it in one stroke for every color used. A brush with pressure variation would be tremendously helpful. The key would be to keep the pen moving and not lift until sufficient line and color filled the page to create a satisfactory drawing/painting (a contour drawing).
This was a fun exercise and could turn into a lifetime of exercise to see if strokes could be reduced to a very low number. One must get extremely creative to create a pleasing and strong painting with just a few strokes. It also suggest that the tool used must be versatile and flexible. A brush with the capacity of making thick and thin would be highly desirable. A brush with a high capacity to hold paint would also be helpful. Thin paint would be an asset to apply and handle. Many things that one must think of before starting. This exercise makes one think more than actually apply paint. In a purely abstract fashion, one stroke is really all one would need to suggest apples on a plate/table/plane. To further define light, we see that more values and colors and shapes- really help us to convey our message. The ability to apply more strokes gives us more toolwork by which we can communicate our idea/subject. To deliver a painting like this with a MINIMAL number of strokes pushes us to be BETTER COMMUNICATORS and maybe???? BETTER PAINTERS.????

Re: DIfFErEnT sTROkeS!!!

Kristen, I know the kind of can do spirit that you posess. Try not to over think it and render your apples in their simplest forms. It doesn't have to be perfection... just an impression of your apples. You're still one of my favorite people in the world.

Maria, thanks for checking in. I know you'll have fun with this one!

Paki, way to get loose! I can alway count on your eloquence to put a fine point on a concept. Your apples are great, as are your words. Nice work!
