The stars are "splatter" for the most part and I always like to add a colorful galaxy effect to fantasy space backings because it helps to make it less boring. The highlights on the helmet are several layers of Gesso...it's really the easiest thing when painting glass or metal.
(Also, acrylic tends to dry hard edged, so some rubbing with my fingertips while it's drying will blur the edges out when need be)
