Now this gets interesting. I have previously downloaded the Cretacolor 2014 catalog and it shows a Karmina 72 set, which seems very logical since they make the SoHo Urban Artists in 72 colours. But now their website http://apassionforpencils.com/produc...colored-pencil only shows 36 Karminas and there seem to be no downloadable catalogs ... just a second, ah, yes, you must know that more info can be found at http://download.brevillier.com/index.php?id=2 and you must register to be able to download. I have no idea why they play such hide-and-seek.

(Yes, you have sent 12 Karminas and 36 SoHos - many thanks once more! Take a look at the cute little memory stick I sent you along the Stabilos and Mont Martes, the Cretacolor 2014 catalog should be there. I can send you a copy if the original one got eaten by your dog or vacuum cleaner.)

PS. I tried to register at Brevillier as I've forgotten my old password and all I could get was 'Oops, an error occurred'. I'll send an email to sales (at) brevillier (dot) com next Monday and ask a question or two about their obscurity.

Thanks Heikki, the raptor hasn't eaten the flash drive, she seems to have a preference lately for reading glasses! Cretecolor makes Soho, at least the pencils, which is just Jerrys Artarama Store brand. Dickblick store brand pencils and Utrecht store brand pencils were both made by Koi-I -Nor. I am not sure why everyone has to have a store brand! And why they can't just sell the product as it was....

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

These Far East sets exist in zillions of variations! This is named Joy:

And a piece of history - a Staedtler 12/24 tin perhaps from 1950-60s:

These Bruynzeel sets might be available at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijksmuseum only...?

Color Express has been a budget-priced line by Bruynzeel - not worth much:

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

Bruynzeel has had a lot of different tins to keep a collector busy:

Color Express 12 from early 2000s, I presume - http://www.larrypost.com.au/media/ca...ess-12---1.jpg

Another - http://www.artmaterialworld.com/fotk...ed-pencils.jpg

Probably recent 12 sets - http://ibnqym.com/stationery/8457-ho...olour-pen-.jpg

One more - http://offers.gallery/p-79-ce-79ce5d...ly-biurowe.jpg

Probably recent 36 - http://ibnqym.com/stationery/6693-ho...olour-pen-.jpg

No wonder there are some fans.

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

I just now realized the Finetec skintones were in my mail box and FIRST IMPRESSIONS:

They are way smoother and richer than I'd expect a student grade to be, so (depending on lightfastness) they might be professional quality. The feel and color laydown are comparable to my best.
Two of the pencils grab at the paper just a little, and a couple more gave hints of resistance, but most laid down smoothly, more like a good Prisma than a FC.
The white is not close to opaque--it certainly is not Chinese White or Titanium white--but it is stronger than my Lyra Polycolor white. Can't reach the FC white right now to compare. The seashell-blush pink, the lightest actual color, is weaker than the white. It's okay on the back of a white envelope but does not seem to show up at all on the colored paper in today's junk mail. I might think different when I see it by daylight, but that one doesn't look really useful.

The cores appear to be centered perfectly, viewed from either end.

None of them came broken.

They smear easily. When I colored across several close-set bars of browns with the white, the color spread across the blank paper.

I'm glad I got them.

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

Thanks, Ambergris!

I found some more old ones:

http://www.paperstone.co.uk/News/201..._of_the_pencil - a Derwent story. Some years ago Derwent released a retro Watercolour 36 set - the pencils were completely colour-painted and came in a similar cardboard box;

http://www.talesfromahappyhouse.com/...-treasure.html - a mixed lot;

https://artpencilsrare.files.wordpre...anada-back.jpg - this set is post-1977 as the Souvenir font (in the middle) was released in 1977 and the bar code also tells something like that.

Love those old Derwents! That last one Berol, would that be a line they made for Canada? Interesting!

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

Liberty may very well be made in China:

http://g03.s.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1OncvH...Xq6xXFXXXI.jpg

I have a 36 set of these although with no brand name on the cover:

http://g02.s.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1GMm5J...Xq6xXFXXXi.jpg

On the backside it says "Produced for Lidl", a large German supermarket chain, but I found it at local bookstore. It was very cheap, and yes, it was quite awful.

This looks nice but what can you do when the hinges and latches break:

http://yellowbee.my/webshaper/pcm/pi...Penci l-l.jpg

Now this is interesting - made in Germany and never seen before:

https://www.lacouronneducomte.nl/web...ox_1222010.jpg

http://www.potlodenkopen.nl/wp-conte...02/1226065.jpg

Whew!

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

Now this very clearly suggests that a Cretacolor Karmina 72 set has been at least in planning stage:

http://farbstifte.net/cretacolor-kar...ml?language=en

So said the downloaded 2014 catalog too. But now I haven't gotten any answer from Brevillier's Cretacolor about my download enquiry and I can't help thinking that they just don't care anymore.

Meanwhile, I got the brand-new 36 set, cash-on-delivery, with no need to go anywhere past my apartment door. I will write a review of them, an older 12 set as well the SoHo Urban Artist 36 set (thanks, Linda!) in ... maybe next week.

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

Heikki I hope plastic containers are not the new trend! Prismacolor has some of their new sets now in plastic. Their tins were cool on the outside, just very flimsy super thin plastic for pencil trays on the inside. So their 150 box is in cardboard, with the same flimsy plastic. They slide downward in quality all the time. The things they did right are even changing to the worse quality. Very sad.

Re: Pencils You May Have Never Seen

I have never ever seen any Camlin set before. I have no idea of their quality or lack of it but the illustrations are beautiful.

If Corot really is Indonesian, it may come from Faber-Castell.

Once upon a time there were European Corots.

Flying Dutchman probably from 1950s.

Disney Cars - https://www.internet-toys.com/produc...s_12582 8.jpg

If you look very carefully with experienced eyes, you can see that Kuelox has stolen its colour numbers from Faber-Castell!

http://g01.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1sseKL...nt-colored.jpg

This lid looks good. http://g03.a.alicdn.com/kf/HTB13bAfG...Xq6xXFXXXI.jpg

I finally remembered that one particularly horrible 18 set was made by Three Star.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8827/1...dcebe5ae_b.jpg

The pencils were unsharpened, three of them split when I sharpened them, and as if that wasn't terrible enough, they smelled of maksalaatikko.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maksalaatikko

I have absolutely no idea how they managed to do it.
