A Mountain Stream by Guanella Pass: Finished

Hi Everyone!

This is my current WIP. I haven't done a serious landscape piece in a long time, so I figured I give it a try. It is 18"x24" (The photo is a bottom 1/3 section) and I am using Prismacolor softcore pencils and white gelly roll pen. The reference photo is from our trip to Colorado last summer. The torrent water with rocks look gorgeous on the photo, but a real pain to draw! LOL! This is where I am so far. Included in the photo is the primary colors I use on the water. I am exaggerating the water movement a bit as I go along, adding a droplet of water here and there using white gelly roll pen. Otherwise, I am just staring at the photo, dissecting the subtle water colors and translating them into colored pencil strokes.

My husband and my son say this is reminds them of Hokusai's Mount Fuji and the Great Waves. Hmmm...I wasn't going in that direction, but I can see why they say that.

Thank you for taking a look at my WIP! All comments are welcome!

-Noriko

I don't know how you do this! Your skill is amazing. This is already absolutely stunning. For how many years have you been working with cp?

Maryinasia, Scamall, Patty, Susanne, himawara, Abi, clydeine and Suzanne,
Thank you sooo much for your kind words!

J Miller, yes, I am from McKinney! Nice to find another fellow CP artist in the local area! Thank you for your comment and nice to meet you!

Vena, I am relatively new to cp. I have been using cp seriously for about a year now. I used to use oil when I was a teen, a little bit of acrylic and watercolor, then I sort of quit art for most of my adulthood and now I decided to come back to it. Now I love CP. There is so much I can do with this medium and so much more to learn!

Re: A Mountain Stream by Guanella Pass: WIP

This is a quick step-by-step on the way I draw waterfall.

I start with slate gray, drawing general shapes of the water droplets and shadows. Then I add indigo blue for darker areas. Indigo Blue on white paper tends to show more royal blue-ish than navy, so I tone it down with espresso and black grape. Finally I add greyed lavender for light shading to accentuate bright white highlights.
