Revd Dr Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch by Sir Henry Raeburn

I love this painting! Have been absent due to holiday festivities - back in fine form now .

Gut reaction is that it's a Dali but not really sure about that.

Hi Nancy! You're in the right ball park, in that the painting is surrealistic, and in the same time period as Dali. The artist who painted this was born 9 years later than Dali in New York. He was a classmate of Jackson Pollack in high school.

Here is a self portrait of the artist, painted in 1935.

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

The artist was a member of a group of artists from California who called themselves the Post Surrealists.

The closest I could get, thanks to your hints!, is Reuben Kadish, but I couldn't find the original work or the self portrait. Am I close?

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

Oh, you're so close, Nancy!

Rueben Kadish was indeed one of the Post Surrealists, but did not paint the two paintings shown.

The mystery artist was a classmate of another Post Surrealist, Philip Guston, and both were classmates of Jackson Pollack in high school. As a young man, Pollock was reportedly even more in awe of this artist's draftsmanship than Guston's.

This narrows it down, as there were not too many Post Surrealists.

Here is a description of the mystery painting:

Painted in 1934, it reveals an intensity and psychological complexity that seem shocking coming from a 20-year-old. The artist narrates his weird battle of the sexes through a complicated mingling of art and life; a sculpted marble hand reaches out of the painting's interior self-portrait to hold dancing maquette of the unhappy woman whose profile the artist has painted in the foreground. With their insularity and bizarre sexual tension, the artist's works seem haunting forerunners of Jared French's mysterious allegorical paintings.

I found it!!!! Harold Lehman *Portrait of a Dancer Plus a Sculptor*
What an adventure! I've seen some beautiful work, some I couldn't warm up to, and fantastic landscapes and learned a little about what one of my favorite painters spawned in this country. Thank you for that! I'll have to get back to posting a new one. My husband is about to dance on my head if I don't fix some dinner!

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

Nancy, that's terrific! This game is definitely a learning experience. I have discovered so many great paintings that I otherwise never would have run across.

I'm going to start a January thread, and will be back with a link to it. Please post your new mystery portrait there. Thanks, can't wait to see what you come up with!
