Floral still life with gold vase

From a photo by Deirdre, RIL,. A4 in oils. I have mixed feelings about this painting

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Just lost mr reply!

I think you've painted this well Christel.
I also think it's the ref which is not satisfactory (sorry Deirdre! )
To me, adding the wide, low basket to the wide, a-bit-top-heavy floral arrangement creates an imbalance ...... using a much smaller object, say piece of fruit, instead would, IMHO, create a better composition.
Play around on the comp with erasing that basket and place a round object until the arrangement looks better .... add more with various positions if necessary, I'm sure it can work!

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Thanks Maureen! I see what you mean with the composition. I could also widen the vase?

Pretty colors, though, and agree with comments. Lots of wasted table top space to the right of the vase. Maybe put a few leaves, petals, or entire spring of flowers there or even a round fruit like an orange.

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Use paper just to crop the right of the picture up to two or three leaves in, that immediately places the vase on a third, notice how the comp is improved considerably?
If it's on paper, that may be all it needs to make your lovely work into a good painting!

It's interesting that we can get hung up thinking we should be true to the reference when really, they're just there to inspire us to our own interpretation.

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Thanks Kay and Maureen.
It's on canvas, using oils. A crop is an excellent idea.
The original reference has a lamp to the right of the vase which I already took out.
Heard of the 5/8 rule?(Golden Rule of 1:1.618) I just looked at a video and think I might prefer it to the 1/3 rule

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

A lovely painting Christel has a classical feel to it.

I agree with Maureen, cropping the right just past the pink/ red flowers works a treat.

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Yes Christel, the 'rule of thirds' is just a basic adaptation of the Golden Mean ... easier to think about/remember! ..... the other is a ratio of 8:13

Re: Floral still life with gold vase

Much better Christel! I might add one or two yellow petals to the left also, just to take the eye left a little and give a broader base to the compositional triangle.

I like this version a lot!
