I have never had any problems with braced panels, regardless of where the braces are or their orientation. I put the D rings between 3.5 and 4 inches from the top edge of the panel and stretch the wire as tight as I can get it using framers knots with the free ends wrapped 6 times around the wire. I never put the D Rings more than 1/4th of the way down from the top with smaller pieces, usually much less than that.
Loose wires cause your paintings to lean out from the wall too much for my liking. Tight wires up near the top also work much better with the suspension wires that many galleries use. The lower the wire and the more loose it is the more the painting will sag away from the wall.
