Iron Man ~ XP in Colored Pencil forum

Howdy!

Thought I'd share an early paper sculpture (can't believe I never posted it here, talk about a natural fit!) that I think better illustrates my process as a paper sculpture artist.

Iron Man
Specifications: 12" x 16" mixed media paper sculpture (Prismacolor pencil on colored cardstock)

Like the Devils Tower sculpture, the pieces are individually colored, cut, and molded into shape. I wasn't building armatures at this early stage so the construction was tricky. The pieces had to be just the right size or the illusion of 3 dimensions would be thrown off during construction.

If you're interested in seeing how this came together, I have a detailed WIP posted in the Colored Pencil forum.

Thanks for looking in!

Re: Iron Man ~ XP in Colored Pencil forum

Thank you everybody!

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd share the progress of a second paper sculpture of Iron Man. This piece is an experiment, still 3 dimensional but the depth is built up in layers. Each colored element is Prismacolor pencil on Mi-Teints paper (just like the first Iron Man), then mounted to black foam core and then cut out with an X-Acto knife. Each colored element is then glued and stacked to create multiple layers.

1) Iron Man's mask is 4 layers deep (each layer about 1/4" thick)

2) The breastplate is a single element (though the white and yellow were colored separately and then glued to the breastplate). When finished, the head and body will be either 4 or 5 layers deep. The outstretched hand and fingers will be an additional 6 layers (each finger will have 3 layers) and will literally reach out of the frame. When viewing face-on, the 3D effect isn't apparent unless you gradually shift your point of view. The construction isn't noticeable until you look at it from an angle.

Thanks for looking in. C & C's are welcomed, I'm learning something new here!

How cool is that! I used to do paper cutting (scherenschnitte). I have too much nerve damage in my arm to do it now but I'm very much enjoying seeing this.

This is so cool!
I love your work on these and such great details.
I would love to see a side view of one of your works to see the relief. I know it might look a little weird and throw off the look but it would still be great to see.
I like sculptures and your work is a little like a sculpture and a painting combined, very interesting!

Re: Iron Man ~ XP in Colored Pencil forum

Thank you Virginia, Anthony and Dianna

Dianna ~ While I describe my colored paper sculptures as 'mixed media,' I think of them as three dimensional colored pencil paintings. Mixed media seems to be the easier reference.

I posted some side and back views of my first Iron Man near the end of the original thread (see link), very odd looking from the side. As for the sculpture I'm working on now, here's a side view of the head. Four levels high for a total of 1" depth.

Re: Iron Man ~ XP in Colored Pencil forum

I did see those pics, this new one seems a bit thicker in the layers but also less molded to shape, blocky as it were.
Both are really cool!

Re: Iron Man ~ XP in Colored Pencil forum

Thanks Dianne

Compared to my other paper sculptures, this one was a real quickie. I'm thinking that I'll try this approach again for a landscape I have in mind.

Iron Man [ II ]
Specifications: 20" x 10" x 2" mixed media paper sculpture
Prismacolor pencil on Mi-Teints paper, black foam core and other craft paper stock.

To give a better idea of the depth, here's a pic of the hand/arm construction:

Thanks for looking in!

Thank you cyclopsAndTentacles and Virginia

Virginia ~ Yeah, that grid reminds me of the original Tron...or the holodeck on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Begin Program!
