Mr. Lipp (acrylic) - C&C Requested, please

Iím one week into my second portrait attempt (acrylic) - my last one was 1.5 yrs ago. The subject is my friendís father. I hope to gift this to my friend for her birthday in April, so I appreciate any and all suggestions and critiques that might help me improve it.

Obvious problem areas I could use advice about are the ear and the sweater. Iím really struggling to make the fabric/folds look right, and I have no idea how to improve the ear.

Iíd also welcome any other feedback. Itís sometimes hard to see your mistakes when you spend too much time with them.

Thank you in advance.

Very nice work! A couple of areas...the teeth could come a bit farther so its under the eye on the right side of the portrait, and a bit of the right ear could use a little more darker detailing. Perhaps the teeth could be a bit rounder on the bottom...all little details that could give you a bit more satisfaction.

Thank you, @jonc50. Iím stuck on the ear. Itís my first one and I feel that I havenít made it lifelike - but I canít quite see where I went wrong. Darkening the darks will be an easy place to start. Thanks.

Great portrait so far. In your painting I do not see the entrance to the ear hole. In the photo reference that area is quite noticeable. Good luck.

I think one of the problems is that your painting does not have the tonal contrast of the reference. We don't have the depth of shadow of the ref. Also in the ref our right side of the face is actually dark against a light background. In the painting it is light against dark. This completely alters the appearance of the ear which looks rather sketchily drawn and flat anyway.
The overall impression is pleasantly jovial and warm.
