Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Thank you Robert for telling the brand.
I was guessing that it was GA. They have some nice bright colors.
The red one you used was really great on the violet/pink, it really jump out
of the picture (or popped, don't know how you say it)
Yes alternatives can make a good job. You must frame the cat.

How many sticks do you have in the half stick set of GA?

You all have been busy here.
I have been painting on a dog, so I have not taken the time to paint here.
But next month maybe.

Blayne, Beautiful work! You do seem to be a shape oriented, painterly painter. So don't worry if you are having trouble incorporating line! Both Rose paintings are very lovely!

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Thank you, Don! I'm so loving this Spotlight topic and really want to explore line in more depth. Unfortunately my whole month has been taken up with a short vacation followed by daily visits to a sister convalescing in the hospital with a broken hip (I'll be taking her home tomorrow, so her story does have a happy ending, thank goodness). But, alas, so little time for painting. Hopefully next month will be better.

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

AnnaLisa, I have the 60 color original Plein Air set of GA half sticks. There's also a 60 color "On the Terrace" set that has no duplicate colors, so I could expand easily to 120 and intend to eventually. Also they even do the half sticks full range "Mini Monty" now, Dakota has that on sale for $829 which rocks, it's got more colors than the full range Sennelier set.

Blayne, sorry to hear that, but glad she's going to be okay! There's always more to come and your roses had line elements!

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Lots of nice work this month. I was quite busy for the first part of the month and have not had time to comment but have enjoyed dropping in now and then for a look. I did this quick study earlier in the month. Never posted it before due to lack of time and also because I don't like it much. I kinda went overboard and used lines for everything. It was also a new paper for me and one I'm not sure I like that much - Hahnemuhle Pastellfix.

It was an interesting exercise and took me out of my comfort zone - I love flowers but am rubbish at painting them. Thanks for the great lesson, Don.

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Robert, you are a dear! You always have such nice things to say. My sis is home safely, and I'll be back to pastels as soon as I finish getting some paintings ready and framed for a group show that we will hang Tuesday in our local community center.

Sarah, I like your lilies! I think you used line very effectively in them. Your lines did but flatten the flowers at all. And you did a super job on those centers, the pistils and stamens (I think that's what they're called).

Sarah, Very lovely painting! I like your use of line! The orange color of the line goes so well with the rest of the flower!

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

I revised the earlier line sketch into a more finished version.
The darker values in the clouds were too dark and did not read correctly anyway.
It lost some spontaneity in the process.

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Sarah, love your flowers. The bright lines don't break their 3D look and you have good anatomy on them. Very accurate. Good idea simplifying them like that, don't say you're not good at flowers! If so this was your breakthrough!

Bill, the sky is lovely in this version. The line of the mountains is good, overall it's softer now.

SarahM. Very nice lilies. I love the translucence of parts of the petals. And the mysterious background. Lovely.

Bill. This is gorgeous!

Re: The Spotlight - September 2015 - Line

Bill, Your mountain scene is very lovely. As we approach next month where we look at shape, in my mind this painting is a wonderful example of using shape. Your mountain is one general shape of blue/violet and within it slightly lighter shapes making up the interior peaks and slightly darker shapes for some shadow areas. The contrasting colors (yellow/violet) really make this painting sing!

Bill, I don't think your painting lost spontaneity at all--it's lovely!
