Re: John's May Journal - Pen and Wash

Congratulations on the solo show. How many paintings/sketches/drawings are you planning to exhibit? Will they be all birds, or will there be some landscapes? Don't forget to take pictures after you get it hung.

Lovely sketches. The little sparrow is such a delight.

Congrats on the solo show. You'll do fantastic, I'm sure.

Yeah, I'm one of those who write in a journal, by hand, with a fountain pen. I didn't realize I wasn't alone until recently.

Re: John's May Journal - Pen and Wash

Thanks Michelle and Debby!

Here are my final two posts for the month. Both are in the 6 x 5 inch Watermark Bindery journal. The first is a Pileated Woodpecker (female). We've had a Pileated (usually a male) visiting the feeders over the last few days, so I decided to do a quick sketch of one, using a reference photo. The second one is a geranium (?) with flowers. I put a question mark by geranium...maybe you flower folks can help ID it. It has geranium-type leaves, and is a perennial in our climate, but the flowers are 1/2 to 3/4" wide, pretty small, and not the typical zonal geranium type flower cluster.

The woodpecker was sketched with ink and then ink brushed on it. The flower was sketched with Herbin Gris Nuage ink, then colored with watercolor pencils and washed with a brush pen.

Catching up on your wonderful birds and notes. Excellent stuff John! Love the chestnut ink sparrow. I want to begin listing the birds in my yard & feeder. Some new friends this month doves and/or pigeons. Must get my book out to ID them. Beauties all. Lots of purple finches. shiny blackbirds. All happy to eat just outside my kitchen window!

Those Piliated Woodpeckers are so exciting, and boy oh boy, you can hear their hammering a mile away! I was thinking of you this past weekend.....My husband and I were hiking and a huge flock of Cedar Waxwings flew into a nearby tree to greet us at Inspiration Point! Talk about inspiration! I took a pic for you too.

Beautiful woodpecker. Can't help you ID the flower, but you drew it magnificently so it can be.

Re: John's May Journal - Pen and Wash

Thanks everyone!

Jamie - yes, Pileated's are very cool birds. Kind of surprising in a way that a big, lumbering woodpecker like that is able to get buy in increasingly fragmented habitat. They're doing well out here. Cedar Waxwings are great as well - and every so often we get to see a Bohemian Waxwing out here (usually in the winter in a different part of the state).
