Jamie's S&B Beta 7x10" Sketchbook

This is a Stillman & Birn, 7x10" spiral bound, portrait orientation sketchbook with heavy, bright white, sized paper. It's called their "Beta" line. It takes all media very well. You can see my full-scale review of it here if interested.

I did this sketch from a photo to see how the paper would respond to Winsor Newton and Holbein Watercolors:

A couple of days later, I went sketching with friends in Hudson, NY, an historical city south of Albany along the Hudson River with fabulous architecture. We met opposite the Hudson Opera House. There were some conveniently located benches and tables there, as if they were designed for artists to come sketch! This is Private Reserve Chocolat ink, washed with a waterbrush.

From there we walked a couple of blocks to the Hudson Courthouse --- a massive building with tons of architectural detailing. This was my favorite sketch of the day. Private Reserve Velvet Black ink and waterbrush:

From that spot, you could turn in any direction and find something nice to paint. I was attracted to this colorful set of townhouses, so after sketching with ink and wash (PR Velvet Black again), I threw on some splashes of color.

If you're interested in my sketching materials, I have a blog post that takes a peek inside my sketching bag.

I can't wait to sketch in Hudson again. I love that town!

Jamie

Great sketches, Jamie. Always fun to start a new sketchbook, especially one that you like.

Re: Jamie's S&B Beta 7x10" Sketchbook

Jamie, so cool that you started a thread for this book. I cannot wait til mine comes but meanwhile, cool to enjoy this. I loved the blog review of the book so much I had to order one (one of these and two others!!!). These are all very nice sketches but the two monochromes really appeal to me, I love those both. You use the washes so well.

BTW, I put the new brown I made in a pen today. I actually think that the preppy issue may have been the Noodler's ink I had in it partly as it works much better with the new PR ink in there. Its a mix of PR Chocolat and PR Black Velvet. Maybe it is Chocolat Velvet? I also got a blue eyedropper bottle and I think I'm gonna mix in all my egg hunt colors like you did to make that blue.

Have a great day!

PS. Love the blog entry on you bag and set up. . . you will have to do a new improved one when the new Nomadic bag comes!

Lovely sketches. The ink and wash is wonderful. I really like the one you added color to.

Re: Jamie's S&B Beta 7x10" Sketchbook

Michelle, thanks. I am so impressed with all five sketchbooks in the Stillman and Birn lineup that I can't even choose a favorite.

Rainy, this sketchbook can definitely take a real beating. I'm sure it would handle acrylics equally well, and is probably great with gouache.

Debby, in spite of all my monochrome work with inks, I'm really a color junkie at heart.

Joan, many thanks (from one color junkie to another)!

Jamie

Sketched at the lake in front of my house with Private Reserve Chocolat mixed with about 25% Private Reserve Velvet Black.

Nice sketch. . . and what a lovely scene where you live

Looks like a good percentage of mix of those colors! I like how you used the wash. . . I tend to OVER wash most times and have to learn to have a lighter hand like you

Re: Jamie's S&B Beta 7x10" Sketchbook

Rainy, thank you. When you overwash, you lose the sparkle potential of the medium, which is its most valued component. Since you can never go back (unless you use gouache or some other white), it's better to stop sooner rather than later. I try to leave more white than I think I should, and I'm always glad when I can resist the temptation to destroy a sketch by losing my lights!

Nice pen and wash work Jamie, you are getting a good essence on some complicated subjects. I especially like the courthouse.
