Post Project Discussion: Portraits - young children

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Portraits - young children
Project Leader: sandrafletcher
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Any Type
Medium: Any Medium
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

Children can be a real challenge for the portrait artist - in more ways than one! Sometimes it is because your piece of art looks like the subject ... but in two or three years time. Getting the age right can depend, not just on careful observation of proportions, but also on knowing that some things - such as shadows and lines - need to be made more subtle. These issues are discussed in the threads below. Why not check them out and join us for this challenge?

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here!

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

I've never done a portrait before, so this will be my maiden voyage! This sounds like a neat project and I am looking forward to working on it and getting everyone's feedback. Robin

Ack! And here I am still working on the last portrait project. Okay, so it's my second entry for the Double Portrait project, but still...

Too many wonderful portrait projects, so little time.

This is adorable. Love the light in her hair. Is this watercolor or what?

Found and lost!

Well, I had it and lost it! Is this common: I painted one of the subjects and although still pretty amateurish (this was my first try at portraits) I liked it. I felt like I pretty much captured the little guy's impish expression. Then I came back to it.

And ruined it completely. I'll try again tomorrow.

Thanks, mmdm. It's digital. I was trying to bring out the speed and excitement of being on a swing when you're young.

Oh, I was wondering how you managed to paint those little letters and stuff on her T-shirt so well. I think the way you did the background expresses the feeling of swinging very well.

I so glad I tried this! I chose Molly(?) out of this cute bunch because it looked like it would be the easiet to draw and I'm new at portraits. I decided not to try to copy her coloring, but to just use a light, medium, and dark color so I could concentrate on the forms. I'm really pleased with it because I didn't think I could do it at all. Hope you like it, too.

This is a great project. Now, I am learning to do portraits and enjoy them quite a bit. I didn't use any of the images you posted, however, I would like to share one I did of my son. He was 8 at the time. He is almost the big 10. If I posted this by mistake please I would like to apologize in advance.

Wonderful portrait, Mrsmiles! I hope he is not too old for me to call him a cutie!

Here's my entry. Oil Pastels on Canson's Drawing Paper. 8x10 size.
I think I'm getting a wee bit closer to a whole face looking somewhat like it's suppose to. Her jawline is off. Hard to do with all the shadows and I was afraid to over work the darks in case I couldn't correct it.
Of course I'm not saying this looks like Sarah, but i am getting closer with proportion etc.

I think you did a good job for a first portrait.
