Question Name that Portrait! December 2005

Can you identify the artist of the painting below?

You don't have to know art history to play. If you can use a search engine to track clues, you can do well at this game (that's how I play!).

If you name the artist, you will have the honor of posting the next mystery portrait. If you are sure of your answer, feel free to post the next painting right away.

BUT - please rename your image. Players will right click on the image to find what you have named it, so don't give any clues away.

Good luck!

Here is a link that will help you to upload an image:

Without further ado, here she is!

What a great character this one is. Looks like an early Australian explorer!
I can hardly wait to find out about this painter.

Wow, what a beautiful painting, Molly! Notice the lighting coming from behind? Masterful! Looks like he´s carrying a canteen and a walking stick for a day excursion...I would guess it is in America, not Australia, Graham...
Let´s see..:-)

Osmar

OK, not Australian. Not American. The painting is a portrait of a well known landscape artist.

Keep at it O! We are right behind you! And I think we are relying on you!

Actually, I have to ask mate, what research can you do based on a beard, and a hundred years or so? Do you just scroll through image after image? If so where?

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

Hi,G!
My guess is that there are not so many famous landscape painters who had such a long beard. Mid-to-late 19th century, I would also guess that he is either English or French, possibly impressionist (by the style of the painting). I am trying to find a self-portrait among French landscape painters, which matches the description...No luck so far. Molly, I am on the right track?
Greetings,
O.

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

Doesn't this fellow resemble the nonsense poet Edward Lear? Lear was also a landscape painter.

Here is a portrait of Lear next to the mystery painting:

Can't find the painting though, so it's probably just a resemblance and nothing more .

Re: Name that Portrait! December 2005

Sorry,

Not a self portrait by a landscape painter! This is a portrait of a landscape painter by a portrait artist.

Not European. Farther East you go. Good guess on impressionism. This artist was very fond of the impressionists, though he didn't feel he had the color sense of the impressionists.
