Gilberte, you got it. I recently watched the movie about his life. While Im sure the movie took lots of liberty with what happened in his life, it was sad to see someone self destruct, especially someone so talented.
This was a portrait of his girlfriend/common-law wife.

I think this one is the portrait of Chopin by Delacroix.

Re: Name that Portrait! November 2005

Graham, you beat me to the Chopin portrait! I knew it was him, because we had a small bust of him in my house when I was growing up. Quite a distinctive profile he has.

Terry, I didn't know any of that about Modigliani. You have me curious to read more about him.

Graham, your clue eludes me about the latest one. Is the word beauty in the title?

No Eileen it is to do with who the woman is. Once you know who she is, the artist will be easy to find, even if you don't know him.

Re: Name that Portrait! November 2005

His first name is William and he was knighted.

Eileen, could you tell me what is the etiquette for the length of time we give clues before revealing the name?
Regards
Graham

Re: Name that Portrait! November 2005

Is it Sir William Dobell?

I guess you kind of handed that over on a silver platter, Graham . I couldn't find the painting itself to confirm this. Though I found a reference to it from the University of Queensland web site saying how it was being displayed at the Brisbane Customs House art gallery, and I thought, hmmmm, Graham's from Australia..... must be the one!

Actually we don't have any specific length of time. I'd say whenever it looks like you've stumped everyone after giving them every clue imaginable .

Yes it is Sir William Dobell. Over to you Eileen.
I was beginning to feel that he might not be known over there and so I had better make it a bit easier.
