Katherine, I just clicked on the link & it took me right to the photo of the old man. Not certain what your problem could be.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

Hi Katherine: Eileen is away till the 7th I believe.
Did you get a chance to check out bigfoto.com's info? Check out the copyright and useage info. They want you to credit and link back if you use their stock images anywhere, preferrably beside where you have posted their image.
Artists are given the ok to create a derivative piece from the stock images but they do suggest a donation if an artist sells their work.
I could not find the last ref image by the time Eileen used it for the project either. It appears that the images change and new ones replace old one's.
Unfortunately that is all I know regarding that image and Eileen will be back in a few days.

Oh, I know what she did! :-)
Katherine, I think you clicked Arie's link instead and it took you to her devianart.com page. That is where I saw a note saying that image was an old on. You have to go through her Gallery (link on main page), if you want to see that photo of her sister and any others there.
If Arie's shot is here, it would have been donated for these projects.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

No - what I did was click the link to bigphoto for the picture of the old man - which is what I wanted. And the photo came up - but no reference or source data. As I said I always make a point of doing an independent check of what people tell me just in case for some reason they may possibly have misunderstood what the permission is.

Now I'm going to assume it's OK - but I would still like to know as my file names always indicate the type of permission given..........and because I can never find the original thread when I want to check things some time later!

I'm doing this in Derwent Graphitints on black Canson - just to see what the effect is apart from anything else - and this is where it's got to after an hour or so. I've defeinitely got problems with the graphite colour on the black paper - but it's interesting.

I'll post the finished version when completed. It's also in a thread in the Coloured Pencil Forum - we're trying to make our minds up about Graphitints! (This has got an PS Elements autofix version as well which makes for an interesting version!)

I'm not sure I'm going to do any more to this on this support - but I am going to do it again on a different support. I guess you'd prefer me to keep more versions over in the CP Forum...............

You posted a portrait, I don't see why you could not post your portrait here.

Katherine T, I'll be looking for more of this portrait wherever you post it!
I hesitate to take up more space with my cp attempts, but I did a little more with Hassan, so here he is.

The portrait is very pretty. One thing when saving as jpg. You are using too low compression and the picture is blured. Has lost a lot of detail.

Katherine, your portrait is looking very good. Go on.

Angelcat, your progress is looking good. I agree with Janet about jpg compression. Reduce only 2, 3 or 5% quality. It can make your image fit for WC uploader.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

Jocelyn, I'm awestruck already with your drawing. Wow.
I like the colored pencil rendition, and I love to see the oil pastels used (very nicely, I might add!) Angelcat, and Maria.
Jules, it doesn't look like you need any supplies! You did great with what you have. I'll try the old Asian man soon.
Katherine, I hope you post your updates on this thread. It's fascinating, and I'd love to watch you finish him. He's coming along very well.
Here's my little guy. I wanted to be adventurous, so I used a smaller sketchpad.

Graphite pencils H, and B. Wee little sketchbook 8.5 X 5.5

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

What I'm going to do in my thread over in the CP Fourm is work through a number of different supports to see what the Graphitints look like on different surfaces and different colours and how they work when water is added

There's no real point in carrying on with the one above as I've had to fix it to get it seen as it is. I'd rather put the effort in to the next one. Happy to continue to post here as well if you won't get bored with this experiment with a new media.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

Thank you everyone for welcoming me. Katherine, don't leave, I'll never find you, I don't even know what the CP forum is.
I have to call it quits on my old asian man. My short attention span isn't wanting to draw clothing. I'm getting lazy and messy with the charcoal. My husband looked at it and said, "Wow, that's an orange face."
I don't remember ever drawing this many lines on a face. Someone should have bought this poor guy some sun screen.

Thank you again,
Jules
