Thumbs up Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

This month we have three great references to choose from.

Feel free to crop the images or make changes.

Others will only critique your work if you specifically ask. If you like, you can show your work in progress in this thread.

We are looking for photo references to use for future threads. If you have taken a photo that has good lighting (natural lighting from the side works best - no flash photos, please), and good clarity of features, and would like to use it for this thread, please pm me.

I put this thread up a few days early because I am going away for a week. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the great paintings and drawings when I get back!

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

Lol Cath!!
I just drew Nicole up this past hour. I was going to do another small oil portrait study of a WC member form the RIL first but I saw Nicole and that is a perfect reference for practice again. I love the outdoor light and interesting shadows.
I am doing this only little, about 5"x9", on a piece of Masonite. It's primed and kind of a toothy surface. I am going to do this in between a commission so may take a couple weeks.
Nicole reminds me of my close friend a bit.
Hopefully I can do her justice.
Jocelyn

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

Here's a colored pencil attempt at Hassan I worked on today for about 1 1/2 hours on my lunch break and while waiting for my husband to finish his evening hike. What a challenging choice of references this month....

Angelcat, this is looking good so far. You got the likeness.

This is my attempt on Hassan. I dont know if I kept the likeness. Because when I drew it's stetch, it resembled him. But when I started color it, it changed a bit.

Oil Pastel.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - August 2005

This is my very first post. I hope I attached this correctly, if not then I'll keep trying. I've been drawing along with you guys for a while now but I've never had the guts to actually post anything of my own. I'm sad to say that it has been a long time since I've picked up a pencil (to draw). I'm a US Navy spouse stationed in Yokosuka, Japan.
This is my old asian man. I always try to keep one with me . Since I'm just starting to draw again I don't have many supplies. If you can see this, it is being drawn on printer paper with a pencil and sanguine conte. I used a divider for the first time thanks to suggestions I've learned from you guys. I'm embarrassed to say that this took me all morning, I envy those of you who can whip out fabulous art on the lunch break. That's my goal.

I'm glad to be here.
Jules

Joss... you draw & paint SOOO beautifully!! I look forward to more updates!

Angelcat....terrific likeness....very well done!

Maria...what lovely work you do with oil pastel!! Do you smudge it a lot to blend? I'd like to learn to work with them.

Welcome Jules to WC and the portrait forum! We're so glad to have you here!
Your drawing is absolutely wonderful! No matter how long it takes. The more you do the faster you'll become. Training those muscles to do what you want them to do! So glad that you posted & please do join in more projects!!

Excellent work for your first post! The conte gives the old man so much character!! And Jules, trust me when I say not all of us whip out art on our lunch breaks!! (I just can't wait until that day comes! )

Thanks Cathleen, I work in layers. Oil Pastels need some time to get dry then you can add other layer other wise you cant do much. First I put the basic shades, colors. Then after some time blend them with neutral colors or midtones. Some times I use complementary colors for this purpose. I blend them with the quantity of pressure, some times more some times a little.
Does it make a sense?

Here is the close-up.

Jocelyn - You drawing is beautiful - as always.
Angelcat - I think you have captured his likeness.
Maria - Your work is great, so full of color and happiness.
Jules - Terrific! I timed myself one day when I was drawing a picture of my grandson and it took me over 8 hours and it did't come out this good! Keep posting.

Hi - I don't want to be a complete and utter pain here, but when a photo ref comes from another site I always personally check it out before using it - and your link for the old man says it's an old one and takes me to another site where I can't find it........... Can you help?
