Thumbs up Paint/draw from the same reference - April 2005

We will be painting or drawing using the references below. You have a choice of two references - pick the one that most appeals to you, or do both if you like!

You can request feedback if you need help along the way. If you like, you can show your work in progress in this thread.

We are looking for photo references to use for future threads. If you have taken a photo that has good lighting (natural lighting from the side works best - no flash photos, please), and good clarity of features, and would like to use it for this thread, please pm me.

Here are the references for this month:

The first is Gabrielle, photo supplied by gcooper.
The second is Kelly, photo supplied by jocelynsart.

Eileen:

I'm heading over to Clearwater Beach today and will make an attempt at capturing Kelly's likeness with the dramatic Florida sky over the Gulf as the background. This paint/draw from the same ref sounds like a great idea.

The girl is just lovely This is so unique and fascinating that I'm contemplating starting a large 16 X 26 painting containig her arms. The other ref is also nice and challanging but I doubt if I can draw both of them in such a limited time.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - April 2005

I've been working on this for several hours now and I know it's off, but not why it's off! Bear in mind that it's in oils, so the paint is wet...and it's a relatively new medium to me! Heck, I'm not even sure if I clean the brushes the right way! I know I can go darker but I have to wait until the paint is dry?...anyway, see what you think!

Hi Deirdre,

Boy, you are so amazing. I envision you locked up in a little room somewhere with nothing but paint/pastels and paper. I think your likeness is excellent and I was going to say the face needed to be narrower in the lower half but no, I think that everything will come together once you start putting in the darker values.

Kathy

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - April 2005

It's great to see all the interest in these references. I'm never sure when I put them up how people will respond.

Deirdre, you are doing so well with these oils. I don't think you have to wait for the paint to dry to go darker - but keep in mind that I'm a novice at using oil paints too . This is so lovely - you have captured her soulful eyes beautifully. And the hair - what don't you like about it??? I think it looks great!

John, welcome here! I'll look forward to seeing your post.

raian and Deborah, I hope you can squeeze this in. Now you have me curious - I have to check out the project you are referring to.

irishxn, that sounds idyllic! That will make a lovely setting for this portrait.

Saeed, will you be painting or using colored pencils? I've only seen your colored pencil work.

Les, , great to have you joining in!

Jacqui and Nanc, can't wait to see what you come up with. I know you paint a lot of children, Nanc, so I probably would have guessed you would choose the little girl.
