Thumbs up Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

We will be painting or drawing using the references below. You have a choice of two references - pick the one that most appeals to you, or do both if you like!

You can request feedback if you need help along the way. If you like, you can show your work in progress in this thread.

If you have a reference that you would like to submit for use in this thread, please upload it to the WC image library and pm me with a link. We are looking for photos with good lighting (natural lighting from the side works best - no flash photos, please), and good clarity of features.

First image is Reflection, photo supplied by lisilk.
Second image is moscous, photo supplied by moscous.

Higher resolution images can be found here:

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

I know this is really cheating but I did one of these for a WDE. Derwent Drawing pencils on Strathmore Drawing paper. 18X24 and took about 2 1/2 hours. I'm just so busy right now... I'll try and do the other one before the month is out. Anyway here's my Lady in Red. First Beth now this one... if April's is one I've done I'm gonna start to worry. Ha.

Peace,
AL

Thumbs up Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

This is a good likeness, and well rendered... but the background seems to overpower the portrait... perhaps more detail or stronger tones in the face and / or drapery, or fade the background a bit... just my opinion of course...

overall, very well done. I will try to post my attempt later this month... when I get around to doing it, that is...

Did a quick drawing of the male.Noticed after I was done his eye was to big or something wasn't right about it?But only spent about 30 minutes on him.
9x12 4b pencil. My drawing is much darker then what the snap shot took.

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

Bon, I'll reply here since I wanted to take a look at the reference. Impressive for such a short period of time.
The only thing that bothers me a little bit is his right (our left) eye. I think the iris should be a little bit rounder (less oval).

While I also find the background very strong, and it does play with the portrait, I think that it works. Al had woven the two together, and I like the left-hand sort-of border he has created. I think it is very well-drawn, and Al -- you've given it a mood all your own. She is a woman-of-the-ivy; mysterious and wild..... wonderful!

This was featured in the WDE's back when I first found that forum, and I was sorry that I didn't have the time to do it; now I can!!! Hooray!!

Deidre, I agree with Lauren. The second one is really good (you have deserved 3 clappies but I took one away for sheer jelaeousness ).How did you do this? Is this pastel, oil, or what? I love the looseness of the scarf colours. I should have a kneeling in front of the Lady icon

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

Nicely done...if a bit dark for my monitor! It was worth downloading and lightening in order to see the picture! The top half of her face has the likeness...but I think you've made the lips a little too severe looking/ narrow for the look on her face...which is soft and wistful. Otherwise....very well done!

Re: Paint/draw from the same reference - March 2005

I saw the previous Feb. "Same Reference" thread and thought it would be good to join in. Here is my contribution for this month. It is oil on board 12 X 16. This painting took about about 5-6 hours. I still consider this a wip. C&c's are welcome. Looking forward to seeing how this month turns out.
