Post Project Discussion: Girl with Pearl Earring

A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!

Title: Girl with Pearl Earring
Project Leader: Lulu
Relative Difficulty: Medium
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: All mediums
Subject: Portrait
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited

Description:

This painting by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer (c1665) has been the subject of much interest, following member BevL's excellent wip, so we thought it would be a good idea to make it into a project.

I have even found an excellent analysis of it by John Hagan (see reference link), at our very own WetCanvas!

Feel free to interpret in your own way, following the original - or not following the original lol - it's up to you.

In one of the reference links you will find a very large image of the painting.

Please describe your thoughts, feelings and any difficulties you encounter as you work on this project. And also please post your progress/final images to this thread.

Most of all, enjoy the journey!

Additional Information:

For more information on the project: Click here!

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

As this project has been opened up to all mediums, I am moving the discussion thread to portraiture. sandrafletcher

Cool Count Me In

I have seen this portrait for years. It has always tempted me. Thanks for the opportunity to satisfy my temptation. I can now quiet those teasing voices.

OK.........I'm sad.

I've been staring at "Girl in a Turban" for a while now, contemplating the meaning. I noticed, she has no eyebrows, and why does she cover her hair? Does she have hair? Why does she look so deeply sad? I think this girl had cancer or another serious illness. I think she is dying. She's embarrassed by her outward appearance, wondering what do people think of her, and she is very afraid. Wondering if she will forever be looked upon this way, and being afraid of that also. She appears ill, pale- skinned and hairless. The turban replaces her beautiful locks she once had.

Ok, so now I'll GO work on re-immortalizing her...........along with all of you guys.

Tina

LOL...Tina! I think so many stories could be thought of to go with many paintings & I DO wonder IF there is anything said to explain this one? I don't own a Vermeer book so does anyone else know?

pastelist, you may have misunderstood/mistyped...that painting is one done by Ruth...

Well, I am deeply saddened. And you know, turbans are associated with cancer patients even now in the modern world.

Actually, the whole thread is mis-titled I think. The name of the painting is "Girl in a Turban" not "Girl in a Pearl Earring", or has it continuously been referred to as both??????. Vermeer worked in toned backgrounds, and verdaccio's and grisailles. He mostly toned his canvases in the middletone gray, worked his lights and his darks from there.

OH............ I am really sad folks. At least the tears will help me squint, right? Blurr everything up real good.

Tina, on the Vermeer site Matt posted, it was called 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', as well as on other sites I've come across in the past. Maybe it is referred by two names, though?

I see a twinkle in her eyes, I dont see sadness there at all. And as Matt mentioned in the other thread, there is great beauty in her face. I also see a very slight smile playing on her lips. Not smiling, but a sense of amusement. Thats my own thoughts when I look at her.

Cancer patients lose their hair as a side effect of chemo, and in Vermeers' day, there was no chemo, so I dont think she could have been ill.

Maybe if you read the novel, even though it is fictional, it might give you a different and more positive way of looking at her? Just a thought.

I have been searching, and I'm finding it by "Maiden with a pearl earring", "Girl in a Turban", and Girl with a Pearl Earring." It is in fact, known by all three.

I know that Chemo wasn't around then, but there are illnesses that cause loss of hair, chemo is not the only thing that causes loss of hair. She has no eyebrows. It's just what I see, my interpretation, but doesn't stop me from painting her And, there are so many reproductions of her! Some lose the interpretation I get from Vermeer's, so I'm studying his not repro's. Some have that twinkle along with a bit of uncertainty and fear, and some just have a beautiful girl with the earring, and some have that emotion on the face that stops you to evoke an emotion. It's just an emotion and thought that I got from "his" painting.

Tina
