Basquiat Painting Becomes Priciest Work Ever Sold By A U.S. Artist

At $110.5 Million, Basquiat Painting Becomes Priciest Work Ever Sold By A U.S. Artist

https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...-by-a-u-s-arti

I just noticed it's actually somewhat old news (why does it now suddenly appear in my Facebook feed?) but this bit struck me:

Quote:
Jean-Michel Basquiat joined "joined the pantheon of great, great artists" Thursday night,...

We have often debated here what makes a great artist. Now we know: a great artist is one whose work sells for a fortune.

...and let's not forget the 'being dead' part. takes the edge off. love the painting, very happy to hear the buyer's plans for it.

Very glad to hear this painting will be on public view.

And what fantastic financial appreciation it had. $3,156,600 per year between sales. I can't think of any other $19,000 investment giving that kind of return.

Meh. If I ha ludicrous dough to spend on a piece of artwork, I'd much rather have this.

Robert Hughes on Basquiat is always worth a reread:

Requiem for a Featherweight[New Republic]

I enjoyed Hughes's commendable snarkiness, but he's got nothin' to say that shouldn't be obvious to anybody familiar with the way things too often work in the fine art world. Basquiat was a cult of personality artist, a commodity waiting to happen, from the get go.

I agree with you. It would be amazing to have an original Calvin and Hobbes hanging in my house.

Alas too many people aren't all that familiar, which is why they need to be reminded about writers like Hughes.

Years ago I had a day-labour job putting up rides for one of those travelling carnivals. It was an eye opener, and I've never ridden on one since

Cheers;
