Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Thanks to everyone who is keeping an eye on this as I go. If you see anything really off let me know. I'm still apprehensive about the whole board. I'm overscratching on purpose so I can knock it back with some ink...hoping for more realistic depth that way.

I'm loving what you are doing here so far! The contrast, curvature, and texture on the head is just beautiful!

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Thank you everyone. I'm still working on this slowly, mostly during the 1/2 hour at the boys' swimming lessons. I'm getting a bit frustrated with the lower neck and chest area, but only picking it up to work on it a little every few days I think will keep me from overdoing it. I hope. I AM totally in love with the clay wire brush. I did have to run out and track down an emergency replacement though. (Hobby Lobby!) I got the brilliant idea to chop off some of the length of the bristles for the doggie I was working on. While it ended up being brilliant for taking off large amounts of ink in one fell swoop, the brush was now useless for the softer fur textures. Now I have one regular and one modified. Best replacement for the fgbrush I have found yet!

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Remember this one? Well I inked in the spots the other night. Now I'm a little scared to touch it because if I can't successfully integrate them into the coat, this one is a goner.

Actually...I rather like the look of it now. It may not look realistic...more like a statue, but it looks great!

If you want it to look realistic, just remember to scratch the tops and bottoms of the spots in the direction the horse hide grows. Does that make sense to you?

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Yep Lorna. I just have to be careful not to scratch out the heart of the black on the biggest spots. If I can nail the spots, the rest is gravy. A wash to put the shadows and lighting back into it, finish the tack, and add the forelock.

You picked this piece for a reason. It's looking so much more interesting now. You came this far... you can do it!

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

Just a thought here, Netta. I would be tempted to try something with a very fine point for the over-scratching, perhaps a size 10 or 11 Sharp sewing needle, or a size 65 sewing machine needle. I like the machine needles, as they are quite stiff.

Re: Refined Beauty - WIP

I just got in my order of 1RL tattoo needles. One needle and sharper than sewing needles. I think I will try that.

How cool! You already got a lot of good advice from a lot of great artists, so I will just observe and enjoy.

You got this, just soften the black spots - I call it "knocking the tops off".
