Artist A-Z: Friedrich

Wanderer above a sea of fog

Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich (September 5, 1774 – May 7, 1840) was a 19th-century German Romantic landscape painter, best known for his allegorical landscapes. These feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins.

His primary interest was the contemplation of nature, and he sought to convey a subjective, emotional response to the natural world. His paintings often set a human figure(s) in diminished perspective in an expansive landscapes.

Practical art

1. make a study/copy of Friedrich's work
2. do a work of your own based on his idea of contemplative figures (and/or animals) silhouetted against landscape.

See you later

Re: Artist A-Z: Friedrich

I don't know this artist either...but he seems very surreal, which I like.
Here's a video, showing pretty much what's on Jacqui's link. When I finish up with Edwards I'll give Friedrich a try.

Re: Artist A-Z: Friedrich

I was just preparing to make a study of the Chalk Cliffs when I came across this thread. How cool.

I saw an exhibition of a great many of Friedrich's works (70 paintings and over one hundred sketches) a few years ago at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, it was amazing. It was also amazing just how many people were there to admire his work. But crowded as it was, it was still easy to get lost in his paintings, they really invite contemplation.

The exhibition also displayed Friedrich's Three Allegories, transparent paintings illuminated from behind, with music composed to fit them:

Artchive has a biography and some of his paintings in an image viewer that allows a fairly good zoom:

Do you have a time frame for this thread? The Wanderer above a Sea of Fog and the Sea of Ice are here in Hamburg and I've been meaning to go and make a copy from life, but that won't happen for another few weeks.

Also, Wikipedia has images of many of his works. Some of those image files are really massive and great for taking a very close look

Hi Jennifer, the time period is usually one month but you can post work and comments after this time as the thread will remain open!!

Thanks for all the links, everyone. I hope to get around to viewing them soon.

I have never seen any of Friedrich's work in person. How wonderful that would be.

Re: Artist A-Z: Friedrich

There is a barn owl photo in the allmediaart forum this weekend (WDE). This is my post. I was inspired by Friedrich's owl paintings (as well as the photo).

June, even half of what that painting sold would be good for you! Very cheerful colors.

Here are mine. A mix of Koh I Noor Woodless colored pencils, Derwent Drawing sticks and Prismacolor Artstix.

Re: Artist A-Z: Friedrich

Nice quirky sketches Sandra. The man above the fog is a marvellous use of the black paper to give the mood. I had thought of doing this one but time has run away from me this month...
