If you cradle panels, you know that even cradle boards can warp.
Here is what I like to do:I use “Hobby Boards” instead of the big one by twos. They are thinner and come in pine, poplar, and oak, at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. I like poplar.
Cut your boards to size of panel, glue and clamp. Wait a few hours.
also, purchase some aluminum angles……again; home depot, lowes, cheap. Cut them to size with hack saw…..easy. Cut half way thru then bend til’ they break.
Now, place the cut aluminum on the inside of the cradle boards flush.
Use self drilling metal screws (the little ones) to secure the angles.Stronger and lighter.
Cheers, Derek

Poplar is light, clear, and easy to work with, and the aluminum braces are a good addition to larger panels. A simple lap joint would strengthen the corners and be easy to make. What is your recommended material for the panel itself?

I like hardboard, birch, and a new product from Lowe’s: Revolution Ply.
It is a poplar, thin plywood and actually pre- primed with acrylic on one side…..cheap and light. I use it for smaller pieces.
I like to seal both sides of my panels.Google Revolution Ply Lowe’s.
https://www.lowes.com/pd/RevolutionPly-5mm-Poplar-Plywood-Application-as-4-x-8/50121135$14.98 for a 4 by 8 sheet and very lightweight.
