Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Thanks Joy. My aim is to get to 5k, maybe 10. I really enjoy running, I enjoy the exercise and being outdoors and it stops me from thinking, which is something I need sometimes! I went to a specialist running shop and was advised that I needed shoes with plenty of support as I've had trouble with my ankle before. The ones I got were Brooks - they're such an improvement on my last pair and they're pink and purple too

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Penny - Hyacinths and Snowdrops! And we are in the middle of Summer here in NZ. Strange to think of you getting to the end of Winter in the Northern Hemisphere!

We haven't had the very hot temps that Australia and the North Island of NZ have had BUT....we did have one day when our temperature reached 31 degrees Celsius! Now don't laugh, as that's very hot for us down here at the bottom on NZ. It was too hot for me! I don't know what that would be in Fahrenheit temps, but it was very hot.

Everyone here in Southland has been moaning we haven't had great Summer weather, then when the weather heats up....they all moan it's too hot! No pleasing most people.
But at least we comfort ourselves we haven't had the searing temps and fires Australia has had. What the Australian people have been through! The loss of lives, homes and the wildlife lost. It's appalling. The Koalas can't move fast enough to escape the flames. The news reports are saying in some areas entire populations of Koalas have been wiped out. Australia without Koalas would be appalling!

Kay M - Good for you getting back into running, well done! Make sure you get good quality sports shoes - they are really worth the price and your feet will love you for them.
I'm like Penny - full of Arthritis all over my body, and can't run anymore but (again like Penny) try to walk my wee dog Pippa as much as possible. I'm a great believer in exercise....especially as we get older it's essential. I have had a Treadmill for many years (I'm on my 2nd one) and use it on the days the weather isn't suitable to get outside and walk. It's especially useful in the Winter. I did try Pippa on it when she was younger....but no! She likes to sit beside my Treadmill and watch my feet on it, but I can't get her to walk on it with me. Apparently you need 2 people, one each side with a lead attached etc. Pippa is so excitable she wont do it.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

A treadmill is a very good idea, Viv.

Yes, spring flowers are appearing. I have a little yellow crocus in the garden. My goodness! 31 celcius translates to 87 Fahrenheit. That is hot. I wouldnít like that temperature. I like our generally temperate climate - though it is very damp at the moment. Typical ďFebruary Fill-DykeĒ weather, early.

I hope your new shoes do you well, Kay.

Iím watching ďPortrait Artist of the YearĒ on Sky Arts.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Vivien - I am not one for the heat, so that would be way too much for me. In South and Central America it was even hotter than that when we we there this past fall , and quite humid to boot.

Penny - I would love to get the programming on Sky Arts, as the portrait show sounds wonderful. It will be a bit before we get any crocuses, and had to shovel about an inch of snow/ice today. Overall, it has been a mild winter with only a few brief snowfalls. We have not had to use the snowblower yet this season. The warm/cold cycles have resulted in a lot of ice buildup. Many in this area complain of the weather, but I like the four distinct seasons, and we do not have excessive heat/cold as in other areas. No tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. either. Many move to Florida when they retire, so it must be very crowded there! The traffic is awful in the winter with all of the "snowbirds" staying for the winter only, and the summer heat is terrific.

I did have to run on the treadmill today, instead of outside, but that has only happened a few times this season. We have a very good treadmill and exercise bike in a split family room area with a small TV. Our first treadmill lasted 22 years, and had over 20,000 miles on it! That is an extremely long life, but Jerry is very good with the required lubrication maintenance and vacuuming the motor area. Our appliance purchases are always very carefully (excessively!) researched, as we keep things as long as possible. Our weights are in the basement.

I am not sure of my next art project. It seems as if the members here are producing beautiful works nearly daily, but I am very slow. I did manage to complete something small for the Floral Challenge to try something different.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Hi everybody, just catching up with all of you. It was nice to read all your news and to enjoy the photo of darling Indy. I have limited time on the computer her so just to say, good luck with the running Joy. (good for you) and Penny, I do hope the pain and discomfort will be sorted out.
I am struggling a little with the wound on my leg after such a big chunk was removed. I saw a dear gentle surgeon here, who changed the dressing, cleaned up the nasty bits that were not healing and gave me an anti-biotic cream to be applied 3 x daily. Unfortunately, I have to wear a bandage from foot to knee so no swimming for me which is pretty lousy. I love swimming.
Thinking of you all with much love . Wouldn't it be great if we could all meet in person one day. Sighhh! nice dream.

Thanks for letting us know how you are, Chammi. I am sorry you areít able to swim - itís hard not being able to do something you really like. I do hope your leg heals quickly. Take care.

My tooth is much better now and Iím taking Ibuprophen for the back pain.

Indy had to see the vet today for a cut pad. Luckily whatever cut it didnít remain in his foot.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Thank you all for your loving comments and encouragement. Love you lots. Today went sketching with a group of 8 people. It was great. Such lovely friendly and welcoming folk. We sketched the beautiful rocks on the coast here in Hermanus. The weather was a little misty but not cold and it all added to the atmosphere. I helped an elderly gent to mix colour for the sea and he was so grateful and over the moon to have the right colours. It gave me so much joy. Colour mixing is my thing .... lots of experience during my days as an interior designer.
Penny, I am glad you are getting some pain relief and that the tooth is a lot better. Poor little Indy.... thank goodness it was a 'clean'cut.
Joy, you are so kind to be thinking about me. Means a lot and I am blessed.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Well - we are supposed to be in Summer here in New Zealand BUT we have had such unseasonable weather in the South of the South Island! Over the last 3 weeks, while the rest of NZ was getting record temperature of 32/35 degrees (celsius) we have been having lower temps and rain.

And to add to it - we've now had 3 days of torrential rain affecting the West Coast of the South Island, Fiordland, and Southland. Causing flooding and trapping tourists in Milford Sound - they've had to be helicoptered out of there. The road to Milford closed and the road to Queenstown closed too.

And we've had lots of flooding around Invecargill and Southland with the town of Mataura completely evacuated and ALLL roads out of Invercargill completely cut off with flooding! People who had travelled to Dunedin to the Elton John concert were stranded in Dunedin - some getting back to Invercargill just before the roads were closed at 3.00am on Tuesday morning. (One of my sons and grandaughter just getting home before the road was closed on Tuesday.)

No flooding in Invercargill city so we were all quite safe in the city - but the city is surrounded by rivers, so it was completely cut off from the rest of New Zealand. Here's a couple of photos (which were taken by plane), of some of the flooding. Hopefully the rivers level will begin to fall today, so people can begin the big clean-up!

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Chammi - thank you for your news. The painting trip sounds great and being able to help someone is lovely.

Indy has his best friend, Wilf, staying as his owner is in hospital. She had a knee replacement and they found a small blood clot in her lung, which is keeping her in longer than expected. I have a video of the dogs but donít think I can post it here.

Viv- Oh dear! It seems to be one thing after another. Flooding is so devastating and very difficult to cope with. It was lucky that your son and granddaughter got home before the conditions worsened. I am always grateful to live in high ground, away from the river.

I hope things get better soon and you stay safe.

Viv That is terrible . After my trip through the transalpine when I was holidaying in NZ last year . I hope they subside as quick as they came. It must be terrible for all those caught in the floods.

My thoughts are with all the people who are suffering.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Hi everybody. Just a short one between electricity shut downs. Sometimes we have as much as 6 hours a day here without power. It is very frustrating. When the power is cut at night and comes on at 2 am, all the electrical appliances start beeping in our holiday apartment. No sleep for the wicked!!!! Still battling with my leg. It is taking a long time to heal and my foot and ankle swell up like crazy if I overdo things. Grrrrr.
Viv, the flooding looks horrendous. I do hope things are a lot better now. My friend Jane lives on the North Island and she says her water tanks are almost empty so they are having a drought. What a crazy world we live in at the moment as far as climatic conditions are concerned.
Sending you all warm hugs from sunny South Africa.

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Hello, Chammi. I am very sorry to hear your leg isnít healing as you would like it. I do hope healing speeds up and it isnít such a problem for you.

What a pain, coping without power. We are so used to having it, itís loss would be a big shock.

Itís damp and cool here but I didnít get rained on taking the dogs out today. Wilf is staying as his owner, Rita, had a knee replacement, which went well, but they found a clot on her lung and blood thinning medication caused her knee to swell up more than it should have. Wilf is good while here but canít be left. He creates merry-hell if I go out without him. To go shopping, I have to get Lesley to mind him. Having a problematic dog staying just shows me what a good boy Indy is!

Itís evening here and I am baking a potato for my meal. Itís a long time since I baked on in an oven, so I will look up how long it should take.

Viv, I hope the flood waters are receding. What some people have to cope with!

Re: The ANIMAL INN - Our Chatroom for 2020

Vivien - How is your garden progressing? It is so rewarding to plant one's own produce. We had had quite a time with deer eating our shrubs. Last week we saw 12 in our neighbor's yard!

Penny - Rita is fortunate to have you to take charge of Wilf. This winter we have hardly had any snow, so I have been able to run outside most of the time.

Chammi - How long are you staying in SA? I hope your leg is getting better by now; you have my loving thoughts always.

We are making plans to remodel our kitchen, and are looking at the plans this week. The house was built in 1971, and we bought it in 1991. With our self-employment, we had done almost nothing to the house that was not necessary until we retired.

In early March we are going on holiday to the Southern Caribbean, and will be gone a few weeks. I doubt I will finish a challenge before we leave, but I may try. At times I am intimidated by the talent and wonderful works produced by the artists here, although all are very encouraging of my efforts.

Jerry and I are currently watching a Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries, set in turn of the 20th century Toronto. It is currently in the 13th season, and we are finishing up seven. It is refreshing to see something where one relied on their wits, not electronic devices!
