Good point. I think a DIY brace that has a wide range of angles would be better. A simple piece of bar stock with a slot in the center or several holes spaced about 1/2" apart, held to the panel holder and the box with threaded knobs that go into a threaded T-Nut like parts set, one attached to an L shaped bracket pop riveted on the panel holder, facing forward so it doesn't poke up when the box is closed, and a threaded T-Nut assembly installed on the flat side of the box itself, up near the front, shouldn't be too tough to fabricate. All you would need is a drill, and a pop rivet tool, plus the parts below.

Thanks, contumacious. That looks like a sensible (and cheaper!) solution.

In case you need more information about different pochade boxes and easels, I've created a guide to many of them on my website:

Good resource.

The Sun Eden pochade box and shelf in their package that comes with a tripod look like identical to the Sienna brand stuff. Is that what they use in their bundles?

I saw one a few summers ago that looked like the best out there if you like to paint big and want lots of palette space. It was made completely of wood, including very long splayed out legs that would hold up a big panel in a moderate breeze. Similar to the Beauport. I cannot remember the name of it.

Re: My Strada's mast wobbles. Is the EasyL more stable?

Hi Moscatel,

With my new setup I'm using a Dolica lightweight Aluminum tripod with a ball head. I think it retails for about sixty bucks on Amazon. Very lightweight, and it was the one Joshua Been recommends on his webpage. I got the tripod in anticipation of getting his palette, but since I went elsewhere, I figured I would just stick with the tripod and see how it worked with the Strada MKII. It seems to work fine, though I imagine the plastic leg clasps will eventually break. So far so good though, and if I get several months out of it, it will have paid for itself. I would get a Manfrotto, and I might if this one breaks, but they are expensive. Of course if it lasts years instead of months, it would be worth it.

Here are a few photos of my new setup.

Randy
