Mathematics and composition

Good day to all.

I’m interested in reading any literature that relates to mathematical and composition within the visual arts. If members know of any books, online resources, dissertations , artists manifestos , statements or quotes relating to the subject I would be very interested in reading them.

Just for the record am studding this aspect of composition purely to improve my own compositional skills and not to write a book or dissertation of my own.

Thanks Adrian

Re: Mathematics and composition

There's some interesting stuff in this one, too:

Math has been extremely helpful to me in setting up compositions, particularly those in which I've combined elements from different sources.

Math and the Mona Lisa by Bulent Atalay. Just finished it. Great book.

Re: Mathematics and composition

Composition relates to mathematics in various ways
-Perspective
-Symmetry/Asymmetry
-Positive & Negative Space
-Balance
-Scale
-Ratio of tonal contrast for example
-Size & Proportion (figures for example)

Any books on composition will cover these topics...it may not be 'spelled' out as mathematics.

Re: Mathematics and composition

The best treatise on dynamic symmetry is Jay Hambige 'The Elements of dynamic symmetry'

If you google 'Jay Hambige Elements of dynamic symmetry pdf'
there is an online version you can download.
However, this is a mathmatical treatise, not a 'how to...' book, it will give you all you will ever need to know about the construction of dynamic rectangles (Phi and Root rectangles etc.) but will not tell you how to use them. For that, your best bet is to download the 'Barstone Studios' videos on design-centric drawing. They'll show you more about this subject than you could hope to find in anywhere else.
