New to abstract art. WIP

Acrylic Hey everyone, I usually dont paint abstract at all. I purchased 10 24x30 inch canvases and am going to see if i can get any better at it. I started one today and it is driving my mind crazy. Why is that? I guess its where I am trying to create something out of my head which isnt what I am used to. Well is is what I have so far. Any advice on how to get better would be appreciated. Thanks C+C welcome. I will post more pictures as I progress.

Hi there,

I think you have the base for a very good piece of work, but so you know... I'm new at this myself. I think this piece could stand on it's own, as is, if you do something to give it a little more texture (not required though). You will get other comments from folks who know more than me and I'm sure they will be able to help more than I.

nice job.

Hi dragging sticks, for being new at abstract you sure have made a good start! You have interesting and varied shapes and colors. If it was me I would intensify the colors a little, but that's because I like color - on my screen they look a little faded, but only you can decide on what you really want. I agree with Jumper that some texture could be interesting. Maybe you could add texture or darken the color inside the centre left outlines and top left corner - there are so many possibilities. I am impressed with what you have got so far, especially since painting in abstract is not easy.

Do you put texture on the side of the canvas?

hi draggingsticks.
Can I ask you what your intention is with this painting?....what are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to express something or explore ideas or what?

It's hard to know if we've succeeded if we don't know why we started.
Once you know that, you can move on to working out how to do it.

This piece looks finished to me. Your color combinations are working. You have just enough line in the left lighter portion to create interest and not overpower, and the purple form or shape provides weight and dominance. The touch of orange is brilliant.
Reminds me of an oil slick with the viewpoint from under water. The mind makes associations and it is dependant on the experience of the viewer.
Paint on my friend.

Hi, At first glance I like this piece, it could very easily be done...but why not place it somewhere where you can look at it for a few days and you may find the painting beckons you to do more!
