Silly question, do you have sycamore trees in SA? They are heavily textured, the bark peels and makes all sorts of interesting patterns and colors. I love them.
Thanks Virginia. Not a silly question at all. I don't think we've got sycamore trees here as the climate is a bit dry. We do have other trees with beautiful bark textures. Of course the gum trees have their outer bark peel off in strips leaving them whitish with dark patches. The fever tree is very interesting with it's yellow bark.

Bonnie, we must have posted at the same time last night! Your rose is gorgeous. The pours always look so elegant, all those lovely swirls.

Christel, they are pretty similar to gum trees, I never noticed that before. I had to look up the fever tree, they are beautiful. It's kind of funny, I've seen photos of them but I thought the color was a photo/exposure error (silly me ) I like the look of them.

Re: October 2019, Challenge and Chat!

With InkTober going on, this one has stretched out over 3 days, so unusual for me to drag any painting out that long I was fascinated by the sycamore's textures so did that ref on Bristol 100 lb/300 series paper and watercolor. Size is 6.25x4.25. Bristol is slick so I thought that would help with the bark.

You both have handled the tree so beautifully. Very sculptural.
Very good Kay!

Re: October 2019, Challenge and Chat!

Bristol is so slippery. I use it for ink but not much else. that's impressive that the watercolor didn't tear it up. Or maybe Ijust use too much water.

It looks great!

Thanks Christine and Virginia! I just used dry brush on it and Bristol doesn't do wet in wet at all.

This is the gorilla done with a dip pen and India ink. The sepia ink and the pink tongue I used a brush with. It's 5x5.
