WIP tiger cub (x posted in animal/wildlife)

Hello all...
Pretty much everything that I have ever drawn is head and shoulder portraits of animals. I don't know why, but I have been so afraid to try a full body drawing of an animal. So I finally decided to take the plunge when I saw the picture of this cub looking behind him in the zoo in the ref. library. (Thanks, Stribb, for putting so many wonderful wildlife pictures in the library this week!)

Now that I have gotten about 10 hours into this, I realized the log I had sketched from the photo had sawed off limbs! Now, that just won't do if this little guy is supposed to be in a natural setting! So this evening I scouted around our property for dead broken off limbs to study so I could try to change this a bit. I have never done a log, let alone jaggedy old broken off limbs, so this will be a challenge for me.

Anyway, for what ever it's worth, here it is so far. It should end up about 11x14, and it's in graphite, charcoal and carbon. Sorry my picture isn't too clear... need another digital camera I think.

As always, c&c welcome.

jyvonne

You are off to a great start -- I love his alertness. And I also love your Animal Portraits. Will be watching with great interest.

Val.

This is going to turn out really nice! It seems as if something has caught his attention and he's very curious about it. Almost like he'll jump on it in a few seconds. You really caught a great moment. Although he's still, there still seems to be action because of the look on his cute little face.

Hiyas Jyvonne
Beautiful job on the fur and the realism of the cub, taking a seat next to Belinda to watch also.

Hi, jyvonne

This is just going to be excellent, as par all your work, you just know how to bring those animals to live.

Thank you, Belinda, Sultry, Logie, Jim, and Bon...
I hope it continues on this track. I have to admit I am a bit nervous, but then I often feel that way when I start out.

Thanks, Bon. I find that I don't do tigers very well freehand. I tend to get off course with all of those stripes. I have tried a couple of times, then stood back only to discover that the head looked like a striped loaf of french bread!

Have a good day.

Thanks, Dave. Have an update right here, as a matter of fact.

Hello every one!

Haven't been able to do so much drawing lately, but worked a bit yesterday and today on the front legs and the log. The log is far from finished... the ring around the stub extending from behind his feet is in the very, very first stage of laying the first layer of charcoal and will not be left in this ugly state. I had to change the limbs... they were sawed off in the orginal picture, but that didn't seem to go with the natural habitat that a tiger would be in.

Well, not too many exciting changes at this point. Just wanted to "touch base" with you all with this update.

C&C welcome.

Great work, jyvonne. You've really achieved the fluffiness of a cub's coat and his/her expression is perfect.

Watching.
