On the 1st July 2002, an American cargo plane and a Russian passenger aircraft collided high over Lake Constance, killing 71 people in all, including a party of Russian schoolchildren. By a miracle, no-one on the ground was hurt, though the falling wreckage caused damage to a farm belonging to Brachenreute. a residential institution for people with developmental disabilities. How the accident was possible is still not clear to date, it appears to be partly pilot error and partly wrong information by air traffic controllers. I rely on symbolism rather than graphic realism to portray something so violent. The tail fins of the colliding planes are visible at the right, they are enveloped in a huge star-shaped explosion. Below it is Lake Constance as it appears from a great height. The crash took place at night, but the stars falling to Lake Constance also represent the souls of those who lost their lives. The colours, pink and blood-red, are deliberately ghastly.
