Urban sketching, anyone?

Hello! Not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this, but I'd like to suggest that an "urban sketching" area be added to the Explore Subjects subforum. With the recent publication of the eagerly awaited book, The Art of Urban Sketching, I know that there's huge interest in this subject, and I'm sure the area would become instantly popular. What does it take to get that going? Thanks -

- Tina

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

You could always start a thread in Art Journals or Drawing and Sk3tching.

I'm a regular follower of the Urban Sketchers blog.

Did you get the book? "The Art of Urban Sketching" published by Quarry. Wonderful!

Doug

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

Have not heard of this book. Good title, I would thumb through it ....

I am currently (and for the last few years) trying to do an in-depth photographic study of the urban landscape in our town. Involves a lot of walking and will eventually involve every neighborhood.

Many of these pix are shared in the daily Photography Shutterbug Forum

This is for reference pix and ideas for a series of paintings called "Downtown Wanderings". I rarely do actually plein aire work, preferring to work from photos in my studio at this time.

These have been posted in the Oil Paintings Forum as they are finished or maybe become WIPs after you-all review them...)

Perhaps this book might help me....

Life is good

Greg

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

The book is exceptional value and is a 320 page softback compendium of sketches from around the world. Here's a link where you can see inside the book.

I also saw a download site where it is available as a pdf file.

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

Yorky, yes, I do have the book, and I recently published a review of it on amazon.com. I agree, it's fabulous! It's the kind of sketching I aspire to.

So - about creating a new subforum for urban sketching... is there a process for proposing this? Who decides these things?

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

We get lots of requests for specialist forums and I have to say that it's not as easy as it sounds. Each new forum needs a miderator and guides and they are in shortvsupply.

If you posted in an existing forum mods and guides would be in place already.

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

Doug, can you tell me what all is involved in being a moderator or guide? Depending on what's required or the qualifications, I might be willing to volunteer, if that would allow us to have a new urban sketching section. I don't mean to be a pest, but I'm curious about what all is involved in managing a forum section. Thank you, Doug -

Moderators and Guides are chosen from experienced and long standing members who have frequented a forum and proved helpful to members. Generally they will have been regulare posters for at least a year.

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

I support this idea. I am getting into Urban Sketching myself, loved the book, love the blog and recently just put together my sketch kit. I would love to see others' work and have a place to share and discuss urban sketching.

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

Let's see how the site runs after they have upgraded the software. This is an enormous site and it is giving problems holding everything together as it is.

We have outstanding requests for new forums for Encaustics, metalwork, woodwork and Urban Sketching which have to be considered at that stage.

OK, thanks, Doug. I'll wait patiently if you promise to consider urban sketching along with the rest. Thank you -

Re: Urban sketching, anyone?

Hi Tina! IMO, the best place for urban sketching is in the Plein Air forum. There are a lot of paintings and sketches of urban scenes posted there, and just like for the "Urban Sketchers" blog, they are all done from life, which is an important aspect of the genre.
