Is it okay to do studies using soft pastels for oil painting?

Hi all,

Do any of you do studies in pastels that you later use to do oil paintings?
Or should studies and the final artwork be done in the same medium?

Your study can be in any medium. A number of pastel artists do value studies in charcoal or graphite.

There is absolutely no reason that the study and final artwork be done in the same medium. In many cases - since studies are generally done more quickly - an artist does the study in whatever medium they can use quickly. Soft pastel definitely falls into that category.

Go ahead, if you dare, but just be aware you are risking your painting license.
