Grace WIP C&C Please!

This is my WIP of my cat Grace. I'd love some C&C on it. I'm really trying to push myself to create not just a strong likeness, but a strong composition and painting. Thank you!

Re: Grace WIP C&C Please!

Shaping up ok Lucy ..... use some darker tones to bed her into the soft blanket/bed, front legs area.
I'd eliminate that hard maroon bar coming down the centre it's unclear what it is or why it's there!
You have a sense of strong sunlight on the bed so I'd increase that sense on Grace ..... her head is very nice snd more definition of her shape will come as you refine the work.

The comp is a little top heavy so if this is on paper some of the lower half could be cropped .... judge it on screen and see what you think.

Re: Grace WIP C&C Please!

Hi Maureen! I pretty much agree with everything you've mentioned. I'm not sure what to do with that dark bar at the top. The cat is on a rug and the dark bar is a shadow under a table. What do you think of just extending what I have in the top left to cover that area?

You are nearly there. If you just lighten up that dark bar enough that we get the feel of depth there..... Sweet kitty.

Lucy, it's the dark red stripe (on the rug?) that's a bit distracting.
For the background, why not keep it just a general, fairly plain one straight across wirh changes of gone because of light? ...... you don't have to copy the set-up or reference exactly.

Very painterly style, personality definately shows on the cat's haughty look... very cat like personality achieved, great job.

My opinion is background is nice and muted and therefore shows off the cat, love the whole pieec.e piece.

This is how I've edited the background. What do you think? I'm still not sure I'm completely pleased....

Great update on the background! It makes a big difference. Now my only crit is this - the shadow in front is so strong I think it needs to follow in a curve up the cats body. It should not be as dark but the fur should show indications of that shadow. You're doing great!

Re: Grace WIP C&C Please!

Thanks Gayle! I've been thinking the next step is to add some cool tones in the shadow areas and warm tones in the light areas.. I think that will help emphasize the shadows on the cat as well as in the background. Your critiques have been really helpful!
